Any other fans of the cheesiest sub-genre of metal? I got into power metal very early on in my metal journey and so it's got a fair bit of nostalgia for me. Soon after I was introduced to Metallica and Maiden, I discovered Sonata Arctica which remains as one of my favorite bands now. Their lyrics can be super corny but their music is really quite good! Other power metal bands I enjoy:
Angra Shaman Andre Matos Theocracy Signum Regis
How about y'all?

I absolutely have to mention Cold Embrace. Very cool Christan power metal from, of all places, India:
Edit: Also worth mentioning is this band, called Santuario (note, not the Santuario I made the thread about a week or so ago)

Cool; I'll check them out!
I'm currently listening to the newest Angra album which I'm really digging. There's nothing too new or unique about it, but it's very well done and high quality melodic power metal.

I used to be a fan of some of it. Not so much anymore. Wuthering Heights is the only one I can listen to anymore.
however, I still like going back and listening to that one band Dream Quest, for anyone who remembers.

I don't understand power metal. ...I mean, how to define it being different than progressive metal or even like classic metal, classical metal, glam metal... gothic metal? It sounds the same to me.
(that's the opposite of the "normal" metalhead and how they feel about black metal. HAHA!!)
Anyway? Is this power metal? Cause there's cheese, there's "power" in the name and its awesome.
...and there's cheese.

I had Wuthering Heights' album To Travel Forevermore. There was one song on it that I really liked a lot but the rest didn't really captivate me too much. I really liked the overall atmosphere of the music and the singer's more mid-range vocals instead of the typical "soaring" high vocals.

Looks like the first single from Theocracy's next album is up on YT. POWEROK, really slow to start but gets better. More of a traditional power feel than the progressive stuff on the first 3 albums. I need to listen to it a few more times. EDIT: Song is a grower. I like seeing the lyrics as this is a song that the lyrics improve. I'm pretty sure the reference is to James 2, faith without works being a dead faith.

Power metal is has long been a favorite of mine. I have been able to see Sabaton live twice and they are one of my favorite PM bands, but my favorite PM song recently is by Kamelot.

The new Theocracy album, Ghost Ship, is good. It's hard for me to believe that Matt Smith has made 4 albums and not only are all of them outstanding, but there is hardly a song in the discography that I would skip over. I think it helps that the lyrics are so solid and really speak to where I'm at in my faith (albeit with the requisite queso of the genre). I do wonder sometimes if I like them so much because they're Christian or if it's because they are a really good band who happens to be Christian. Reading some of the reviews online it would seem to be the latter. But, I do recall that, as someone put on this site (Thomas, maybe?), we tend to overrate Christian metal because we're so hungry for it. Time will tell, I guess.

I think my quote best applies to the more underground genres... specifically black metal, maybe grind and death metal too. I think a lot of average sounding underground Christian music almost automatically gets 2 thumbs way up because ...there's nothing else ...or they don't reference the secular scene at all for quality music because of conviction. (This used to be me) As far as Theocracy, they're just talented. That's quality music secular or Christian. Just not my preferred listening genre.

It was a really interesting take on that concept. It was also nice to hear Alissa's clean vocals.

Some groups add some symphonic elements to give it more of an "epic" sound. It's a more "positive" fist-pumping feel than say thrash--a lot of anthems, songs about victories, killing dragons, climbing mountains. Yes, Powerwolf would be power metal. Thomas, I know it doesn't matter to you, but what I've heard of Powerwolf is pretty critical of religion, but I don't know that they are outright blasphemous.

Maksim Ryanskiy (from CBM bands Dying Blaze, Last Battle, etc) has a "heavy/power metal" project called Copper Serpent. The debut album has finally been released! Here

This was my genre in my secular days! Absolutely loved it! I had hundreds of power metal albums, maybe 400-500 of my 1,600 albums back in 2010. Favorites were:
Blind Guardian Helloween Angra Rage Grave Digger Gamma Ray
Favorite albums: Blind Guardian "Nightfall In Middle Earth" "Imaginations From The Other Side" Rage "Black In Mind" Angra "Temple of Shadows" & Holy Land" Rhapsody "Symphony of Enchanted Lands" Labyrinth "Return To Heaven Denied" Grave Digger "The Grave Digger" & "Knights of the Cross" Gamma Ray "Somewhere Out In Space" Lost Horizon "Awakening the World"
Since leaving that behind I've hardly found any truly excellent Christian power metal bands. Liked Theocracy back then and still love them. Signim Regis' last two are amazing! Everything else seems to have the edges shorn off. It's clean and not as aggressive. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of generic secular power metal bands like that and most of the Christian ones seem to have that tame sound. It was cool that Harmony had some amazing songs but they just have that "safe" sound. I feel like I might like Within Silence more if I gave in and bought an album but they seem like that too. I don't know. I did preorder the new Millenial Reign hoping for something good. Not sure there either.
Favorites in the Christian scene:
Divinefire Theocracy Audiovision Signum Regis Narnia (though they're generic they've got great songs oftentimes) Golden Resurrection (Christian Liljegren obviously is a progenitor in this style) Diviner (if they count as Christian) Innerwish (same as above)

I'm familiar with most of the bands mentioned here. I'd never heard Cold Embrace but they don't seem to be a band. I can't find anything more about them. I'd never heard of Sceletara but they don't seem to have Christian lyrics.
The bands I have heard and own material from, in addition to those I've mentioned are:
Affector Allos Angel 7 (I really enjoyed the last album "Hail To The King." They have a Manowar vibe with some death metal-ish vocals.) Encrave FireGate (Love "Woe, Woe, Woe." It's like Cirith Ungol only power metal) Mehida Northern Flame (Good stuff. Actually got the T-shirt before Starve the Flesh/Metal Helm quit printing) Seventh Avenue Siam (More in the Queensryche vein than power metal though) Sinbreed (just the first before they lost faith) Teramaze (like Innerwish, not exactly Christian but have those tendencies because of the members)
I've also heard Sacrecy but never bought anything from them and have S91 "Behold The Mankind" on order.
Definitely some good stuff! In the secular scene though there were just hundreds of really high quality bands! Absolutely loved the style! Death metal and black metal hold their own in the Christian scene but power metal has a rough time. Lots of one off bands that just disappeared.

The reality to me was that there is every genre of Christian metal that has at least a few good bands/albums. Even in power metal. Yet when it comes to collecting Christian metal, it's at the bottom of my list of genres. But I do have some, mostly from Record label samplers. That being said female fronted symphonic metal bands were very rare and few, but sleeping romance was probably the closest thing to well done. HB had a different sound of female fronted. Whisper from heaven is beautiful and epic. And there are others in the shadows like aggelos and khalysis. Whisper from heaven and sleeping romance. Sleeping romance is one of the bands with christian themed lyrics with one track showing it's Jesus that is the light she believes, on both albums. Whisper from heaven has three songs available, and leaves you demanding more.

There's a Catholic website that releases metal compilations. Here is the 4th one as an example. They have a variety of styles (for example, CBM band Erlösung were featured on volume 1), but it seems they have a lot of power metal on these comps.
