Does anyone here have a makeshift home studio? I would like to see what kind of spaces people have and what kind of gear they use.

I can take some screenshots, maybe even a video when I'm not at work. My "studio" isn't the typical mixing boards, padding on the walls, piles of electronics and state of the art computer/software. (Like what my brother has) My setup is literally a good laptop, with good software and a few pedals and mics are the only recording "hardware".
With a lofi setup, I get a lofi sound. Anything else would be too shiny for black metal.

Here's a quick shot of my work in progress. I call this wall the "accent" wall.

My "Studio" simply consists of a beefy pc with an audiophile sound card along with Reason 4.0, Adobe Audition and FLStudio

Does anyone of you guys still use some 'external' multitracker (from time to time)? I know it usually doesn't make that much sense nowadays, but I sometimes I enjoy the sound and the feeling of using this older stuff. For example that Thy Fiery Haze EP was recorded on a Yamaha cassette 8 tracker...

Hey guys! Just browsing a few topics and thought I'd start posting here… My home studio doesn't consist of much. A pretty small room in my house actually - about 8x10 with some acoustic tile here and there. Using a Mac mini, with a Mackie interface and a PreSonus Tube Pre-amp, KRK monitors running into Apple Logic Pro. A few mics: Rode NT-1, SM57 and Sennheiser 609. That's about it! I love the idea of going old-school - all analog or using a multitrack cassette setup - especially for a more "necro" or lo-fi sound, though. I know Scott Conner (Malefic) from Xasthur recorded all of his albums this way. I think it makes a huge difference in the final atmosphere it produced.

I cant make anymore music until I obtain a copy of Reason 8.0 for Windows 10 One of the many reasons why I'm holding off on that "free" upgrade. I don't know if my software will be compatible with it.

The guitars on your latest album sound so clean and crisp, so I might just pick up one of those pre-amps myself!

The Pre-Sonus is actually just a mic pre. I run my microphones into it before they hit the interface to "warm" them up and try to get a more analog sound. The amp I used for DWN was an Orange Tiny Terror with an Ibanez Tube Screamer going in. Glad you like the tone, though! I personally feel like it was a little "too crisp" at times – I've got a Blackstar HT5 I'm using for the next album. Which brings me to another question I've been asking around: Do you guys prefer old-school recording with actual amps and mics, or using digital amp sims or emulators (like Axe FX)?

I kind of feel bad that I don't know what any of that means. ...but as alluded to in previous threads, I have a Dean "something". You'd think after 4 years playing it I knew what kind of guitar it was. I'm really not anti-equipment, it's just that I don't think the clothes make the man... and black metal ain't no business meeting.
I know Ghouls mentioned earlier in the thread that mic'ing a tube amp is the way to go. I'm absolutely 100% pro "line in" and even my ancient petal has an amp emulator. My view is the mic just adds variables to ruin takes.
I mean, if you're mid riff and snow from the tree above your PC falls and hits your laptop when you're USB'ed in, you can still finish the take. If that snow hits your amp mic, *POP* the riff is ruined... now I'm wasting time on unnecessary takes.
If you have your mic a 1/2 inch to the left from the previous track's mic placement, you now pick up .0857% more treble than the other track, which effs the eq, and that effs the mix and then even the master of your full length sounds like a compilation.
It's not worth 8 billion times the recording headache to maybe, MAYBE sound a little bit better.

Ha, ha. Yeah no argument there… using a mic adds 10x the headache for getting a good tone. And, yes, moving it a tiny amount affects the tone – which is why once I find a sweet spot on my cab, I do everything but glue the mic in place for the duration of recording. I'm not one to say 100% anything is the way to go because it's about what works for the artist and the sound they want. As a matter of fact, one of my amps has a direct out recording output, which I may use instead of micing in the future. One thing I can't get, which is sort of vital to how my songs build and adds tension, is feedback when using virtual amps. I guess I could cut-n-paste some into the tracks, but I want to keep it authentic. This is actually one of the only reasons I go this route.
I've never been one to spend a lot on gear either until the past few years. I just always wanted some nicer stuff after a life-time of playing, so I saved up a little here and there to get a couple of decent guitars/amps. I'll have to admit, although it wasn't my absolute favorite style at times, playing in Bloodline Severed had some cool perks. We were able to get some endorsements that let us get nice gear fairly cheap. At one time I was endorsed by Washburn Guitars and Peavey, so that's how I got some of my stuff. But depending on the "style" of black metal, I would agree that the equipment plays a small roll. I'm thinking a new Dimmu Borgir style mix verse Xasthur, per se.
But to say it sounds better, or is worth the added expense and aggravation, is an argument you won't hear from me. lol

Good points sir. Maybe one day I'll perk up to knowing more about better equipment? ...or it may get worse and future recordings will only be kvlt and trve from a battery powered tape player.
If Fisher Price or a phonograph is how I'll record future albums, it's safe to say that I've probably hit my head...
...though I'm strangely tempted to try that...

I cant make anymore music until I obtain a copy of Reason 8.0 for Windows 10 I was looking at Reason also, from the suggestion of my buddy Adam who does the project Anschluss Amor. But with it's hefty price tag I opted for Music Creator 7 by Cakewalk Studio for $49 from Steam (a site for video games and software) -- store.steampowered.com/app/346590/funny thing is, yesterday I began tinkering around in Garageband on my iphone and went out and got an ipad (no way i can justify buying a macbook or regular mac) but now that i'm getting the hang of it and it's ease of us I'm bummed I bought Music Creator lol it has a ton of stuff in it, very professional just I'm liking Garageband a whole lot more, plus I can use the icloud to move the GB files between my iphone and ipad so I can even do some work on the tracks while I'm at work and at home.

It´s an old thread but who cares.
My studio is my bedroom, I´ve done no acoustic treatment yet because I´ll probably move out soon. When recording most of the time I combine my acoustic instruments with different VST´s. Although, I have a guitar amp I started conecting my guitar to my interface and then I run the signal through "Amplitube" or "Bias Amp". I also plan on getting some real drums when I move out or at least a electric set because I hate to program drums.
Gear list:
- a pretty good gaming PC - DAW (Reaper & FL studio) - Scarlet 2i2 - USB audio interface - Scarllet CM25 - Condenser Microphone - Stagg GM 55 - Dynamic Microphone - Scarllet HP60 - monitoring headphones (only use when recording acoustic instruments or vocals) - JBL LSR 305 - Studio Monitors - Logitech Z323 - speaker with subwoofer (reference speakers)
Instruments that I have: - small bagpipes - 2-3 tin whistles - "dvojnice" (a traditional Croatian/Bosnian flute-like instrument) - Nektar Impact GX 61 (midi-keyboard) - Epiphone SG G-400 (electric guitar) - Rhythm rd300 (acoustic guitar) - Stanford Durango S 40 CM (12-String acoustic) - Harley Benton PJ-5 HTR (5-string bass) - Fender Mustang I V.2 guitar amp

I have more guitars than I care to think about: multiple 6 and 7 strings in multiple tunings, as well as an 8 string guitar, a 5 string bass, and multiple acoustics. The 8 will be making at least one appearance in the next batch of tunes I've got rattling around..... My recording setup is thus far entirely digital. I've recently "upgraded" my "studio" from an iPhone 6s and iRigHD2 with a set of $20 sennheiser headphones to a MacBook Pro and a pair of Mackie MR6 monitors, running Reaper DAW. Running a POD HD500 direct into USB, will also use the FX loop of the HD500 to use my Behrginger V-amp Pro unit. I can also still use my standby GarageBand/iRig combo should need arise, and the Mac version of GarageBand is MILES beyond the IOS variant. I'm hopeful to be able to throw a sample or two of my latest adventures up in the next week or so, though life offers little in the way of guarantees For reference purposes, the Stormsinger track on TBL vol1, and all the "guitar demo" stuff on my SoundCloud page was iPhone/iRigHD2 for all guitars and bass. While I'm perfectly happy with my results, I'm hoping for even better in the new setup......

UPDATE TIME!!!! ”small home studio” is up and going.... MacBook won’t recognize the POD HD500 currently, so that’s being routed thru the (not pictured) trusty iRigHD2 for an interface at the moment, and i’ll PROBABLY be looking into a better interface with more I/O options for re-amping and direct tracks etc.... Currently, i’ve got the V-Amp being routed into the FX loop of the HD 500,in a dual amp path with a POD amp sim on one side, and the V-amp on the other, then blended back to a mono track. Generally have the V-amp’s “hot rodded Marshall JCM800” patch on, with either a Bogner, Boogie, or ENGL amp some from the HD500 being blended in.....but but I am getting the BEST tones *I* have personally ever achieved, currently. (Guitar tones on my HoTBL2 track are the direct result of Chris Sharrock’s involvement) Once I figure out EQ-ing guitar tracks in Logic Pro X, it is truly GAME ON....

Home studio is super bulky right now, anyone have a digital only setup? Not counting mics for drums and vocals, and cords to line-in for guitars.... my setup is "my computer".
