Søker Tilflukt - The Dark Woods of Sorrow
Year: 2018
Genre: Black Metal
Every now and then a brand new band enters the scene and blows me away, but it doesn't happen all too often. The most recent example I can think of is Skald in Veum with their EP 1260 Days. That is, until Søker Tilflukt came around.
This mini-album is twenty-three minutes of mid-tempo, primitive black metal with a folksy feel to it. It's really not that uncommon of a style, but this guy pulled it off incredibly well. Once I start listening, I just don't want to stop until it's over. The album has a rather full sound to it. Although its unproduction levels are high, the guitars still have a thickness to them and are layered with chords to create a powerful sound. The riffs are pretty catchy and absolutely perfect for this style. The drums frankly don't stand out, but they support the music well and do what they need to do. Lower black-metal rasps somewhat blend into the background, allowing the guitars to have the limelight. Some clean vocals (which are lyric-less) appear from time to time, adding to the folk-oriented atmosphere.
The album is heavily laden with interludes to add more atmosphere. Most of them include nature ambience accompanied by an acoustic guitar, but one of them, "Lunar Poetry", is more like a full song, just without vocals. It is a rather emotional piece which starts to tie the album together well as the third-to-last track. Søker Tilflukt nailed the progression on this album, and you can feel the adventure take place as it goes on. It's better to start at the beginning than in the middle. Part of this is accomplished by the sweetly short song lengths, all clocking in at under three minutes. Each song is packed with just the right number of ideas to fill its slot without getting old but without making you wish there was more.
I hope that in the future our scene will look back and remember this as one of the best albums of 2018, because it sure feels like an instant classic to me.
