One of my first metal albums was "Dragons of the north" from Einherjer. Soon after that I discovered Enslaved (Albums "Frost" and "Eld") and Thyrfing (the swedish band. I think there are more bands called "Thyrfing") for me. For the reason some of the beforementioned bands lyrics are antichristian and glorify war I can't really listen to them any more. So I would be very happy, if someone could recommend similar sounding bands with christian themed lyrics or at least lyrics that have a positive message. Any hints for a newbie like me? Thank you very much in advance!

@crimsonwarrior posted a review in the Review Section of a release by the project Søker Tilflukt. It has a rawer production/mix (which I really like, though not everyone else does) and with a short running time.... but they definitely pull off the "folk black metal" approach very well. Unfortunately, there are Christian bands that also seem to invest in this approach with their lyrics - from the other side of course. (killing demons, etc.) I'm not a fan of this myself, but its not a dealbreaker for me to enjoy it if the music is good. If secular bands hate Christians and have violent lyrics, and Christian bands hate Satan(ists) and have violent lyrics.... I would argue that there's not much of a difference in the concept. (the hate is just pointed a different direction, depending on which "side" they're on)

I think when someone sings about killing demons, it`s more a spiritual battle. For me that is okay. I think every christian knows that kind of battle in one or another way. Enslaved have lyrics like (translated) "Strokes of swords crushes the skull of the christians". I just can't listen to songs like that. Songs that talk positively about killing people are a no go for me in general I think. Thanks for the tip. I'll check out Søker Tilflukt!

The top ones I would recommend (that aren't already mentioned in your introduction thread) are DEFINITELY: Slechtvalk; Arvinger; Bellor; Haszem; Holy Blood; Evroklidon. There's a band called Gadaren. They're really new, but have a TON of potential. There's a somewhat lo-fi project called Ancient Warrior you might like. There's also an older experimental band called Biały Krzyż you might like. Hawthorn don't really have folk influences, but... they're sort of "vikingy" anyway. It's hard to explain. Check them out. There's a project called "Elgibbor". He does a lot of "normal" black metal, but he has songs with viking/folk influences as well. I can try to get you some examples, if you don't want to go through his discography. EDIT: OH, AND MORGARTEN. EDIT 2: And Moreld.

anfauglith I'm not familiar with the bands you mentioned, but the first band I think of that would have a more positive message is Slechtvalk. Much more "viking" than folk. Their whole discography is amazing, though the last album does tend a little more toward death metal than black metal. Christian Viking metal bands that I can think of off the top of my head would be: Astillian (more Christians in a band, than a Christian band) Holy Blood (early albums are more folk, later albums are more viking) ArvingerHope this helps and welcome! EDIT: NI beat me to the punch by like 3 seconds! Strong work nocturnaliridescence

Oh, this project is really great! I especially like "Frost", also because of the lyrics.

It's not Unblack Folk, but some of their songs have the occasional black metal scream. In regards to Christian Folk Metal, it's the best up to date. They are called Illuminandi, and a video is on this post. Other than that Holy Blood, unblack folk, and then some of the members went off to found oskord and their ep/album weapon of hope is really awesome for folk unblack. As far as viking metal, the better suggestions are already mentioned, and if you like the female fronted scandanavian symphonic metal that's not unblack, whisper from heaven and especially Sleeping Romance. Sleeping romance is more a light versus darkness band, yet one track on both their albums have Christian verses or mentions Christ.

I got the Moreld CD in recently and I'm really enjoying it. I don't think I've heard anything else in the Christian scene quite like it and there is definitely a gap for this kind of music that needs filling. It reminds me a little of Asmegin and OTYG from the secular scene.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Oskord, which definitely fits the Viking/Folk metal. It's definitely more folk/death than folk/black (think Amon Amarth-lite with Celtic instruments), but since people have already mentioned Holy Blood and Illuminandi I think it will be OK.

I consider Oskord to be black metal "enough" that I made a page for them on UA. It can get kind of tricky with folk metal, because once you start including influences from any kind of "extreme metal" it can start to sound like a bunch of different things.

It looks like unblackheart briefly mentioned Oskord up there. Their music sounds good, but hasn't left me with much of a lasting impression thus far.
I suppose I've always considered folk/viking metal a form of black metal because it's roots are there, but I guess it is possible for a band to draw on other subgenres to combine with their folk music (as you mentioned, Amon Amarth is an obvious example).

Hallå från Skandanavia! Interesting thread. When it's about viking metal with black/folk influence, I wonder why no one mentioned Vardoger's late 90s EP White Frozen:

Both the atmosphere and lyrics are pure art. Their music from that EP and a part of Søker Tilflukt's together with Extol is even used in a NHL 20 game video in a creative way!:
