It's been a long time since I've tried recording new material for Deophobic Necrosis (what with having a family and all), so I got new strings for my 7-string and tried getting a good tone out of my Line 6 Pod HD500X. So far, I'm not having too much success and getting a little discouraged. I think part of the reason is the pickups in the guitar, as it's a 7-string Ibanez Gio and still has all the same stuff, save the strings.
So I've been doing research on pickups. One that my brother recommended to me years ago is the Warpig humbuckers by Bare Knuckle. Thing is though, that they're close to $300 for getting the neck and bridge pickups. I may just have to suck it up and get it at some point.
Another pickup I've been looking at is the Seymour Duncan Nazgul/Sentient passive pickups. I also saw recommendations for DiMarzio D-Activator, though I think that's an active pickup and I'd have to re-wire my guitar for it.
What do y'all recommend? I'm trying to record death metal guitars with a 7-string Ibanez Gio tuned to G Standard.

Oh man, I'm really going to show my ignorance in this post.
You'd think recording 11 full length albums with one guitar, I'd know what it is. Says Dean on the head? I'd also record multiple, multiple albums before I change the strings. I'm a weirdo and think nasty, rusted strings just have a lovely distinct sound to them.
Also, I haven't had a guitar pick in a while so I shred with part of a necklace. (I'd like to say I do that for sentiment, but its a combination of that and I don't like most pics I've tried)
...that being said, I DO know what humbuckers are from talking to my brother (who ironically builds guitars) and.... you can't go wrong with those for extreme metal. XD

Another pickup I've been looking at is the Seymour Duncan Nazgul/Sentient passive pickups. I'm far, far from an expert, but I've really liked what I have heard from the Nazguls. They're my favorite of the current Seymour Duncan line up. I've been wishing that I held out for them when I bought my guitar this summer. To me, they're more black metal-ly than death metal-ly. But I suppose it depends what death metal sound you're going for. I like this comparison video:

D-activators a passive pickups, and won’t require re-wiring.
Nazguls have a very “modern” quality to them.
I’ve got 6 strings I tune down to 7 string range that have Dimarzio x2n set and Seymour Duncan Black Winter set, I’m sure there will be some slight differences to the 7 string versions just because there’s more wire and magnet because of physics.....but they hold up well to low tunings. Also had an Epiphone LP7 that had a SD Invader in the bridge, had plenty of gain but slightly bass heavy, probably due to the short scale length of the guitar. If you’re not averse to rewriting, , the EMG 81-7 sounds very good as well.
Just a little something more to consider...I’ve got a POD HD500 myself.....and while it’s a great piece of gear, I’ve never been truly happy with any tone I’ve gotten from it until I started blending it with other gear. There are too bs of people out there that feel like there are real shortcomings in the onboard cab sims, and will use the “preamp” versions of the amp models (no cabs) into their DAW with separate impulse responses inside the DAW. Might be worth exploring before you shell out a couple hundred for new pickups....

For the last Christmas song DxNx did, I remember I had to mess with the settings in Mixcraft a lot to get it to sound tolerable. That was before I changed the strings though, which I initially thought were the problem. I guess I'll have to mess with my DAW a little more and try and get what I want. I'll keep y'all updated!
