I don't feel like updating this regularly, but y'all can take a look at my last.fm profile to see what I've been listening to: www.last.fm/user/JulienbakerfanThere's a lot of repeated scrobbles because I keep music playing at night.

It sounds good, but I feel like the production is almost too good. The music is trying to be epic, but it ends up feeling a bit stale and mechanical.

I've never been able to get into Stryper, but their newest album has the coolest cover around.
I seriously don't know what it is about Stryper. I like Judas Priest. I like Iron Maiden. I like power metal. Heck, I like Poison, Motley Crue, and 80s Alice Cooper. I should like Stryper, but for some reason they come off as too cheesy and overproduced. I don't know why I don't like them, but can get into something like Poison, which is even cheesier and poppier.

for some reason they come off as too cheesy and overproduced I find their music to be overproduced, too. I can't tell if that's because I normally spend so much time listening to "rawer" music, or if they genuinely need a different producer. As for cheesiness, eh, that part doesn't bother me as much. If they started out as some ultra-serious gruesome Lucifer-Impaled-type stuff and then became cheesy, that'd be a problem. But clearly they enjoy what they do.

It's just weird to me that Stryper strikes me as cheesy and overproduced in a way that is a turn-off, but I can listen to equally cheesy and overproduced stuff and like it. If they started out as some ultra-serious gruesome Lucifer-Impaled-type stuff and then became cheesy, The transition from Training for Utopia to Demon Hunter

Ali Tabatabaee, Ben Osmundson, and Dan Palmer of Zebrahead, has a side-project called, Fear No Empire, and it is good.

Deepfriar Would you consider Screams of Chaos to be "black metal"? I've seen them mentioned a bunch of times in that context, but MA calls them "industrial/heavy/death". As for me, Reverorum ib Malacht - Long Into the Time Beyond

As for me, Reverorum ib Malacht - Long Into the Time Beyond Yeah they are difficult to categorize, but no not black metal I don't think. I discovered them way back in the 90's. Phenomenal release, they should have been more popular. Very unique. Epic industrial death war metal? Lol

A few days ago I took Cinema Strange - s/tout of the depths of my record shelf. The album came out in 2000 and I bought it back then. I remember that this stuff really blew me away back then (being something like 17 years old in 2000). If I listen to it today I am able to also see the weaknesses that this album has, but nevertheless it is really great stuff with a refreshing kind of sick humour. I found a radio interview with the band back from 2000 which was really funny because those guys gave no serious answers at all and it all made me laugh (what is kind of weird for a death rock outfit... the interviewer also realized that when she told the band to stop laughing so much, because they are a goth band and have to be serious and dark). "Shine like a dagger and poison in woodland and laugh like a wet-nurse with a sword through your breast! Funny, like thumbscrews and ripe guillotines and maidens when drowning and electric chairs!"

this piece/performance has some of the most satisfying suspense/build up/peak moments i have ever heard on a classical guitar recording, never stops giving me chills (another one would be Segovia's interpretation of the Chaconne)
