Or do you play by ear?
I'm curious to see if there are people on the forum that can actually read sheet music. Even after taking a music theory class and a keyboard class in high school, I still have trouble figuring out what it all means, so I have respect for anyone that can read sheet music.
I play bass guitar at the church I go to, and I always play by ear.

Only when looking at hymnals / during church. Otherwise I do everything by ear.

I've been reading music since I was a little kid, but have huge respect for ear players.

I can technically read music - but no way fast enough to look at it and just play it. For piano, the notes in the treble are "Every Good Boy Does Fine" and the bass is "Good Boys Do Fine Always". (can you tell I learned the notes when I was a kid?)
Tabs, its just counting fingerspaces on the fretboard.
I have no idea how to interpret tempo or timing for sheet music.

I think I understand the basics of it, but I can't read along and play at the same time. It's easier to just guess while I hear what the keyboard player is doing. Also I'm not ear trained, so unless I can point it out on the guitar, I usually don't know which note I'm playing. Lol

I don't know if I'd consider myself a trained ear either. Experienced ear at best? LOL

Maybe six years ago, I was corresponding with a female vocalist of a fledgling New Zealand band called ‘Enoch’ (Lorraine [Titley] Brodie) who, when I asked if her band writes music, laughed at me, saying “That’s so old school!”. Soon after, during a correspondence with Phenix Rising drummer Taylor Hardy (when we both were in Arizona), had a slightly different attitude, saying how he “wished [he] learned” to read sheet music. And no, he did NOT laugh at me. 😄

Not well enough to sight-read music. I suppose I wish I could, but there are other musical skills that I wish I had more strongly than the skill of reading music.
