Tertullian - The Utter Destruction
Year: 2015
Genre: Raw Black Metal
Tertullian is a project of Fire (Elgibbor, Sacred Revelation), and one that had been around for quite some time before finally putting out an album. The Utter Destruction was recorded over a span of about thirteen years. This causes the album to have remarkable variance in production quality from song to song. I noticed a similar variance on the Elgibbor album Repent or Perish, so perhaps this is normal for Fire. The concept might sound sloppy and unprofessional, but I actually like it. It keeps the album interesting and prevents it from becoming too monotonous. Songs stick out from each other, and that matters a lot to me.
This is some very raw, aggressive black metal that doesn't hold back. It still has some atmosphere though. The ambient section in the middle of "The Cursed or Blessed" is fantastic. It has rainfall ambience with the sounds of a sword fight, creating a very medieval and war-like atmosphere, which makes sense for this kind of black metal. "Darkness Under His Feet" has some cool spoken vocals and background synths that create more of an epic atmosphere, which matches the slower style of that song in particular. There's not much else to say about the atmosphere.
The music itself sounds very angry, featuring buzzsaw guitars, frantic blastbeating, and aggressive growling. It's not always super fast though. There's a fair amount of tempo variation. The songs slow down relatively often. "Darkness Under His Feet" is a song that is generally slower than the rest, as I mentioned before. The riffs are satisfactory for the most part and usually nothing more. There are a few that stick out a little, but there aren't many that I'll be singing in my head afterwards, and there aren't any absurdly complicated parts that leave me breathless or anything like that. It's simply some competently played raw black metal that is fun to listen to every once in a while.
Overall, this album is not good enough for me to automatically recommend buying it. But if raw black metal is your thing, this might do the trick. I come back to it every once in a while. The first two tracks, "The Cursed or Blessed" and "Darkness Under His Feet" are my favorites because they have those unique qualities that I mentioned before. Both songs are available on YouTube if you wish to hear them.
