Let's make this the Raw Black Metal thread. I saw that Thomas was listening to some the other day so I know I'm not the only one who listens to raw bm. And please no hate. Being critical is okay, but only if you understand the mentality behind no-fi culture.

Are raw and low-fi two separate sub-genres (that overlap) or are they basically the same? I don't think I care much for raw black metal, though some low-fi stuff like Flaskavsae I really dig.

"Raw" is a term that can mean different things to different people. To me, lo-fi was always an aspect of raw, but not the only criterion. It also had to focus on aggression and heaviness. So Verdelger would fall into raw BM under my definition, but Flaskavsae wouldn't. Crimson Moonlight's first demo would, but Divine Darkness wouldn't.

The words could be interchangeable. But some bands could just be really bad at recording and mixing whereas other bands have a certain mentality about audial fidelity. A good example would be nattesorg - poor production, Azrael - raw mentality.

Not just bad at recording/mixing either. ...some of the Christian raw black metal bands have some major performance issues as well.

Thanks guys. Yeah I think generally speaking, the raw black metal just isn't my thing. I don't mind not-so-good production, but the general style doesn't really interest me like other styles of black metal. Not just bad at recording/mixing either. ...some of the Christian raw black metal bands have some major performance issues as well. That's true within the secular realm too, but yeah, there are quite a few just really terrible acts out there...

Master Destroyer - Fuck the Black Metal SceneSome weird mixing going on with the vocals. They're kinda shrill. But otherwise, this is my favorite thing from the secular scene in a long time JUST based on the song titles, to say nothing of that awesome raw, punk-influenced sound they've got going.

Including timeless classics like "If I Was in Mayhem, I Would Kill Myself Too" and "Battle Vests, the Only Way to Show Off Your Shitty Taste in Music".

"Euronymous and Gaahl: Missed Connections" gets my vote for greatest song title of all time.
