Hey so I'm on a quest for searching for the perfect guitar tone to show my producer so he can help me go in the right direction as far as tone. So far I think I found it but it's not what you'd think.
Listen to this song.
So it's not metal but the tone they achieved is so evolutionary in rock. That album started emopop and brought emo into the 00's and made it relevant to a whole new generation of kids (my generation). They took the heaviness of grunge, riffs from Weezer, and the clarity and production of pop and made this new genre. I want to take this tone and make black metal with it! I think it will be unique and beautiful.

That will be sweet.
For me, my ideal tone for 20 odd year in my head has been a blend of the Master of Puppets rhythm tone mixed with the rhythm tones off Green Day's Dookie album, believe it or not. I'm also partial to Jon Shaffer's (Iced Earth) tone early on, around the Stormrider era.
Trying to mix the roar of an awesome JCM800 tone with the "oomph" of a Mesa Boogie Mark iiC+ is not an easy thing to achieve without havin those amps.......and now, I'm not even sure it that would be the "right" tone for what seems to come out of my fingers these days.

My opinion, guitar tone is 10% amp/pedal, 90% how that sound is then modified with the recording software algorithm.
In this regard, as long as there's enough gain, I have little preference on what the distortion used is like.

Good guitar tone require a good player, guitar, amp, mic AND a good mix/master job. Amp has alot to do with the guitar tone

There's some truth to that.
...I think you might be inclined to agree more with me if I showed you a before and after of guitar I've produced...

Cool, would like to hear what you have. I know there is a million thing you can do with at guitar track after it has been recorded. But at the same time if you have a really good and nice sounding track you dont need to do much with it afterwards;)

Cool, would like to hear what you have. You got it. This is from the upcoming 4th full length Orationem album. This is from the same sample I posted in the other thread. Raw, not mixed - www.orationem.com/raw.mp3General mix, effects and pre-mastering - www.orationem.com/notraw.mp3I wouldn't go as far as to say the original guitar recordings are complete shit, but my opinion, the "not raw" has a much wider, deeper, polished sound compared to the original meh guitars that have had zero help.

I actually kinda dig the raw. The not raw is good too of course. But the raw reminds me a little of Scepter of Blood in the guitar tone, and I like that.

That's because I did NOTHING to the Scepter of Blood guitars sound. LOL

Thanks for sharing the sound clips Thomas. Yeah General mix sounds better than the raw mix. Got your point.
