Hey! I'm CrimsonWarrior. Those of you who used to post on the Blackened Hymns Forum (before it was deleted) may remember me. I've only been listening to Christian black metal for about two years, but my collection is decently large anyway. My favorite Christian black metal bands include Crimson Moonlight, Grave Declaration, Parakletos, Vaakevandring, Shadows of Paragon, Swine Suicide, Lengsel, Erasmus, Stronghold, Bealiah, Kekal, O Majestic Winter, and Slechtvalk. I enjoy ambient music as well.

Hey greetings man. Glad you could make it. I think I saw a few posts from you on Blackened Hymns, but I don't think we ever talked.
Vaakevandring. When I saw Antestor in '98-'99 (somewhere in there), Ronnie was the same dude that did vocals from them. Are they still making music?
Hey PM me what you'd like your custom title to be and I'll create it.

Vaakevandring split up in 2007 after their last performance at Endtime Festival. Yeah, Ronny Hansen (Antestor, Grave Declaration, Morgenroede) did vocals for them. They had a demo in '99, a live EP in '01, and an EP which was a re-release of the demo plus one other track in '04. All of their stuff is very rare, and the music is great.
Once I come up with a good title I'll PM you.

Man, I'm really out of touch with the Christian black metal scene. Sounds weird to say considering the forum and well... recording and supporting it... but I blame the fact that 1) I haven't had a CD player since 2004 and 2) I really only listen to a handful of bands anymore now really.
...which just happen to be secular. : /
I really should branch out from Carach Angren and Fleshgod Apocalypse and *gags* listening to my own recordings.

Since you listen to a lot of secular stuff (more than any other Christian I know), I want to ask you something. Do you feel that the quality of secular black metal is generally better than Christian black metal? I find that a lot of non-Christians think that Christian black metal sounds far worse than secular stuff, but that could just be out of lyrical bias. Similarly, I'm sure that I wouldn't enjoy Satanic black metal (even if the music is good) because I disagree with the lyrics.
You don't really need a CD player to listen to music anymore. Just rip the songs to your computer and put them on an iPod, or even listen to them directly from your computer. That's what I usually do. It's been a while since I've actually put a CD in a CD player.

Hey CW! Good to see you here. Well, I should introduce myself too I suppose. I've been listening to Christian metal for the past ~10 years or so. I mostly like doom/death and black metal though I enjoy most everything within the metal realm (sans anything -core). Some of you might know me from the Christian Metal Realm where I'm a moderator. I'm also on a few other forums. Other than metal, I enjoy hiking, shooting, drinking good beer, and leading a Bible study group for the 20s/30s age group ministry. Some of my favorite Christian black metal bands are: -Admonish -Antestor -Cloth (eh, "black metal' is a bit of a stretch but...) -Crimson Moonlight -Dodsmarsch -Epta Astera -Erasmus -Evroklidon -Flaskavsae -Frosthardr -Grave Declaration -GRIM -Lengsel -Parakletos -Sanctifica -Stronghold -Vaakevandring -Vardoger -Vials Of Wrath

Sorry, I work rather rigorous hours so during the week, a few hours at night is all I have in free time. To answer your question regarding quality if secular is better, yes and no. The yes would be, the best secular bands are head and shoulders above the best Christian acts. Lyric content might have *something* to do with that, but this music scene is HEAVILY about who you know, where and how often you play and how much money you sink into your art. The no would be, I've heard some AWFUL secular bands. There are TONS of them and I find myself wondering how they even made an album, why they even think that sounds good and there's no way they'll be anything besides a very obscure local project or online trinket. I haven't heard any really awful Christian black metal bands. As far as musical preference, I prefer artists that have a larger pallet. I think the biggest plague on Christian black metal, for YEARS, is that because of their faith, they won't listen to "non-Christian" black metal. ...so their understanding/experience of black metal, is essentially what every other Christian black metal band is doing, which is about 4 shades of black metal to choose from. I don't mean that to sound harsh or a stereotype, and of course there are plenty of exceptions (and I'm sure somebody knows a Christian band I haven't heard of that will knock my socks off), but I really think the scene would have a MUCH fresher music variety if many of the musicians weren't so scared to listen to bands, to see how they do it. There's some secular bands out there that will listen to ANYTHING, and not surprising, there are about 12 shades of black metal to choose from. I hope that makes sense...

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I think the reason why I generally tend to avoid secular black metal is obviously because of the lyrics. I really don't want to support or listen to anything that would directly contradict my beliefs (whether it be Paganism, Occultism, Satanism, or just general anti-Christianity, I won't listen to it), so that leaves me with very little to choose from. I've found a few bands that I enjoy, Hoth being the greatest example, but there's not much out there for me. In other subgenres where anti-Christianity is a bit less common, it is much easier for me to enjoy secular music.

I didn't listen to any secular metal because I didn't want it to effect me and I didn't want to "support" it. I even avoided looking at the imagery. This is a topic for a different thread, but I had one major event in my life that I would call an "awakening"... that led to my change in branching out in what I listen to, among other things. Long story short, I'm closer to God than ever and I enjoy entertainment. Some of that entertainment is a horror story and the business is black metal. Is the director of that horror movie doing all the things he portrays in his films? ....or at least has a systematic belief about it? ...I doubt it, but it is possible. I don't know his heart. I'd be more inclined to believe that he goes through the McDonald's drive through and grills out on the weekend, like any red blooded American. Film directors aren't that different from black metal artists.

So, as I promised: here is a longer introduction by me As you may already know, I'm Thomas, now 18 years old and from southwest Germany. I've been listening to Metal for about four years now, and maybe at the and of 2012, I discovered the christian metal scene (if I remeber right ^^). By that time, it was astonishing for me that there are actually a lot of christian metalheads around the world. Last year I joined the old Blackened Hymns forum, and now I'm back here If I had to name some of my favourite bands, I would say Vaakevandring, Antestor, Immortal Souls and Amorphis. I also enjoy many other music genres by now, e.g. Rock, (Dark) Ambient and other electronic music genres, (Neo)Folk, Classical Music, Martial Industrial... Well, great to be here and to read from you all again! Greetings, Thomas

Hey guys, my name's jeff and just reached out to Thomas Eversole yesterday after 14 yr long absence lol Idk, was thinking about whatever happened to him and a google search led me to his Grim website. Hanging out with him at Cornerstone is really the only memory of that festival lol well the only memorable memory lol
I'm actually really more into metalcore/power metal but my buddy Keith is big into black metal so he's been showing me some bands, and I've slowly been getting into it. Where once I used to be a purist and only listen to groups that sound like early Bathory (RIP Quorthon), Dark Throne, Immortal etc. over the past 10 yrs or so have grown a much deeper appreciation (musically) of bands like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir (or dummy burger as friends called them ;p ). But I'm more into melodic metal so melodic/symphonic black metal is what appeals to me most of the genre.
Once I came back to the Lord this past August, within a couple weeks I knew I had to stop listening to secular music (also like pop stuff like Lady Gaga lol, /ducks from the rocks being thrown) so now I listen to purely Christian bands. It's just what I need to do for myself.
Among the black metal groups I've found and been enjoying are:
Ecthirion Grave Declaration Blood Covenant
plus the old standby's of Schletvalk (sp), Crimson Moonlight, Vaakavandring, Lengsel, Sanctifica.
My only beef with black metal and even some of the Christian bands like Frost Like Ashes is the corpse paint, since when I learned about it from a friend who at the time was pen pals with Euronymous prior to his murder (actually has a letter post marked the day of his death from euronymous) and said that the corpse paint symbolizes being diseased with bubonic plague. I don't know, always struck a chord with me that Christians shouldn't look diseased.
Anyhow, that's my "hello" post lol I'll shuddup nao

Jeff, so glad you're here. Hey, ladyGaga has some good tunes. I'm not afraid to say it!
I think you'll be an added breath of fresh air to the forum.
Interesting perspective on corpse paint. I've always viewed that as "what the motive behind it?". Sure, it has a dark history, but a lot of things do that aren't used for darkness, and vice versa.
I see it as like owning a gun. Am I going to mame, vandalize and kill with it? Or will I collect and increase my marksmanship with it?

Thought I'd say hi. Apologies for closing Blackened Hymns so abruptly. I'm not into metal anymore (and haven't been for a long time, even though I still did Quest for Serenity). More into country/country rock these days.
Still got a Quest for Serenity album half done that I might finish one day.
All the best for this new forum.
