So, I was scouring YouTube for some new music to buy. I wanted some intense and raw black metal - I don't care where it comes from or what they talk about. Some keys are ok, but nothing that sounds like a music box party or belongs in the atmospheric thread. (don't get me wrong, I like that stuff, but sometimes, I need something straight forward and raw)
Its been a while since I've looked for new music and I figured I'd look and see what 2017 and the last half of 2016 had to offer.
I know it's been discussed that the Christian black metal scene is stagnant, but I'm hear to tell you... this secular scene seems just as or even more stagnant.
Previewing 2016-2017 album after album, it seems like everything I listened to was one of the following: - Had amazing drums, but the guitarwork was one dimensional and boring. (like old repetitive death metal played higher on the fretboard) - Had amazing guitars, but the drummer sounded like they struggled or the drum machine was goofy. - Claimed to be black metal, but had bouts of weird folk/gothic/operatic bellowing - Sloppy. What the heck? And you're signed? Come on fellas. The instruments need to play together. - Sloppy mix. I'm all for a dirty sound, but when that goofy guitar lead drops everything else out, nope. - The first 50% to 75% of every song makes me think the CD belongs more in the New Age section than the Metal section - One song is blistering black metal, exactly what I'm looking for and the next track is... rock? - Black and roll. Black and doom. Black and something else slow. - Black and thrash which really just sounds like thrash with black vocals. - Poor song structure. ie: awesome riff the first 8 times I hear it, but the next 8, nope.
I found one ALBUM that fit what I was looking for, and its available for preorder. Not only is the rest of their discography some of the junk I mentioned above, but its on a major record label. Since when is awesome underground black metal not on an awesome underground black metal label?
Not sure if its good or bad (probably both in their own way) but what I'm honestly looking for sound wise will be pretty much like what I play. Intense drums. Wall of sound guitars that play dark melodies. CONSISTENT tracks without lots of gawd awful filler. It shouldn't be that hard to ask for - tons of bands from the late 90's did it. It just really seems to me that this new music is like getting handed a glass of water that a room full of people have already drank out of.
Anyone know of anything that's been released in the last year that I would like? I know I'm being picky here. HAHA!! Any and all feedback is appreciated.

LOTS of music is stale, stagnant, and poorly executed these days. It's not just "blackmetal". One of my biggest fears and hurdles to overcome is that my own music falls into that sort of classification.
I don't understand how some stuff actually comes out on "big" labels......

I don't understand how some stuff actually comes out on "big" labels...... It has virtually nothing to do with what they sound like and it has a lot to do with who they know.

I should have added ".....when I try so hard NOT to sound that way" to my last statement.

Oh yeah. Leave it to the Metal Archives forum to be useful for once. Made this same post there. There's two more albums I've got to have!
I'm set for new music for a while.

Even though the melodies are a slightly different approach, as far as musical "execution", this band has probably the closest format to Orationem that I've seen. Love it.

WOW. Its like Portal (Australia) and Lightning Swords of Death had a love child! If you like Portal's sound mixed with black metal, you might like Mitochondrion and Abyssal (UK). Neither have new albums as far as I know, but they are both dissonant death/black metal incorporating some really dark elements from doom, drone, and noise.

So thinking about what you've been saying and something Levi (Happiness and Something Psychotic) told me. Black metal when pure and done WELL(!!!) sounds balls off the wall amazing. And I think you're(Thomas) when saying that true black metal has just been lackluster recently. black metal has reached a point in its genre's history that metalcore fans have moved beyond metalcore and have infiltrated the scene with their own idea of what black metal should be. Myself being in this crowd do agree with their idea, but realize from a bit more matured perspective of the history of metal and black metal specifically is that true black metal just has a special quality to it that any post-black, blackdeath, raw black, or any other genre mixture doesn't have. Good examples of what I think is good true black metal would be Evroklidon, Alcest's first demo, early Darkthrone (post-soulside journey), and some other stuff.
continuing my search for good black metal, I find the finnish scene is the best place to look. They seem to be doing something right, even today. If there were to be a band fitting all your criteria, it would be a Finnish band or one that is influenced by the finnish scene. Try this

Also Satanic Warmaster and Fornicatus seem to be the most popular bands from Finland, so I suggest checking them out too

Couldn't get into Archaeaeon. Abyssal is cool! Reminds me of a more ate up (in a good way) Myrkskog! That Korgunthurus is pretty cool, but that Sarkrista just sounded like old Naglfar to me. (not as fast as I'd like either) Also Satanic Warmaster and Fornicatus Alcest's first demo, early Darkthrone Looking for newer music bro - like this SOUND from 2016 or 2017. Already heard that stuff.

The layout of instruments is AWESOME. ...kinda wish all their riffs weren't so obviously "4 chordy" though.

I found Havukruunu back in 2015. I find their music to be pretty enjoyable. I think I have posted about them on here in the past. They have some releases for free download on Bandcamp.

Same here. I mean, 50 seconds into that track I posted, my jaw finally closed and I flew over to here naturmachtproductions.bandcamp.com/album/kelle-surut-soiand bought the digital download. Haven't had the chance to really digest the album, but I keep coming back to that song.... Best of 2017 I've heard so far. DEFINITELY.

Haven't had the chance to really digest the album, but I keep coming back to that song.... Best of 2017 I've heard so far. DEFINITELY. EASILY. You know how sometimes you hear an album and you just KNOW it's going to be your "album of the year" with 8-9 months to go, it's just THAT good, and then you spend the next 8-9 months alternating between disappointment because nothing else will live up to it and desperately hoping something actually DOES because that will make it a VERY good music year? Yup. Buying the digital copy as soon as I can access my computer instead of my phone, and planning to keep checking back for the shirt/physical bundle to open back up. Trying to mentally dissect the production end of things, because this sort of "raw but polished" thing that's more "warm and moody" tha "cold and harsh" is pretty much EXACTLY what I'm wanting for my end product.

New instrumental black metal on Fallen Empire. I suppose I am a couple of weeks late in posting it. ungesehen.bandcamp.com/Wow. That's pretty good. I do miss vocals a little bit, but the music is definitely in my wheelhouse. Holy smokes I need to get this. XD far from being a new band but make sure to check this out! As far as straight up black metal goes, this dude is my hero I thought this sounded a bit "2 note" at first, but the track just kept getting better and better. __________________ I still think Der Weg Einer Freiheit's newest is still "album of the year" for me. I've drifted a little bit away from the title track being my favorite, to this track being my favorite. UNBELIEVABLY good.
