I saw a thread like this at the MA forums and thought it would be cool to bring here. Basically, the first poster (that's me) posts a song. Someone replies to it with their thoughts/opinions on the song (nothing more than a paragraph, but at least a few sentences), and then they post another song. Some else replies to that with their thoughts and posts another song, etc. Feel free to post your own music if you're looking for feedback on it. The songs you post could be CBM familiar to us all, an obscure project from another genre, or anything really. No boundaries as long as it's music. Also, please try to select songs of a reasonable length. I'd prefer not to listen to a 20-minute harsh noise wall track lol. Additionally, please embed your videos (if it's a YouTube link) within a spoiler using this code:
(YouTube link)
Feel free to post links to other websites (Bandcamp, Soundcloud, etc.) but make sure streaming is available. If the only way to hear the song is to download it, please don't post it. We'll start with this song:

I thought those riffs were cool, but I wish there were more of them. They almost have a melodic black metal feel to them. I like the shouting type vocals. Really fits this genre of music. The production is good, but I think it would sound even better if there was more of a muddy/dirty sound. The drums were my least favorite part, kind of basic - but for this genre of music, it does fit. Here is my video to comment on:

Solid blackened symphonic death metal. I like how there are so many texture and tempo changes, but the overall "vibe" stays largely the same. It is a genre that one must take care to not over-produce nor under-produce, so as not to take away from the extreme metal or symphonic elements, respectively. This release seems to be a smidgen towards the over-produced side, but still retains the needed edge.

Folk metal, as the artwork implies, though it's a bit lighter / more melodic than I would have expected. Doesn't sound bad at all! I feel like the production values take away a bit from the atmosphere they're [presumably] trying to set up. The reverb in the [very catchy] chorus works well, and I feel the folk instruments could have benefited from that reverb, too. Overall the song is melodic and upbeat, but it's not overtly "cheerful". Solid folk metal for staying inside on rainy days? Next song:

Glad this thread is getting some replies! That's an interesting song! I was at first expecting it to be instrumental and I really liked the acoustic intro with what I think is a viola/cello. The vocals caught me by surprise, but I really like them. They have kind of a gothic feel to them and I like the reverb they used. The drums later caught me by surprise just before the chorus, and the chorus itself surprised me with harsh vocals. I don't even know what genre of music to call this. Acoustic gothic metal? I like the song overall, but the chorus felt repetitive and I wish they had changed it up a little the second time. And now for something completely different: I wanted to post a Shoujo Byou song as the first song in this thread but I was afraid it might drive everyone away, so I saved it until now. If you're reading this and going to post the next reply, try not to let the voice acting at the beginning of the song bother you and you might end up hearing something you like later on.

The music is great. Its pretty technical, avantegard and well performed. I wish there was a bit more "heaviness" to it, but this isn't a big deal. I think the Japanese(?) language in the vocals gives the music added distinction. The actual singing/vocals themselves really make this painful to get through. I like colby jack cheese quite a bit, but if that was all I ate, after about 4 days, I never want to see a piece of cheese again in my life. This is how I felt getting past 3:30 of a 5:41 song. I started out really liking the vocals, especially the spoken/narrated parts, but several minutes in, it was just too much "squeaky Asian girls". This was only compounded by the vocals being extremely loud in the mix.

Hmm. The drums are really nice through that whole track, but I'm not a fan of the guitars at all. They sound way too "wall of sound"-y to me and I prefer it when riffs are more distinguishable. However, I like the riff that starts at 2:17 and then repeats a lot. Vocals seemed unremarkable to me but not bad. I really like the ambience that it cuts to around 3:30 and it reminds me a lot of Flaskavsae.

It's a personal taste kind of thing. Objectively there's nothing wrong with the guitars, but I'm personally not really crazy about how they sound. Trying to think of how to describe it, I guess I prefer guitar notes/chords that are more distinguished from each other, rather than blending into each other? Not really into the guitars starting around 5:00 either. Overall though, the music seems to be really well put-together and keeps one's attention. The overall sound isn't bad at all, and clearly a lot of effort went into this. Next song:

Definitely a song with some surprising turns, starts out with a pretty basic synth choir then turns into some type of "chiptune" (that I personaly didn´t like much) thinking that I wouldn´t like it all, the song morphs into this crazy mash of elements that offer something very interesting. I can say that at the end I did like the song, but I have a feeling that the purpose was rather to just mix stuff together without any deeper meaning (not that somethings wrong with it )

The song was funny for what it was, but I have a hard time enjoying music that isn't meant to be taken seriously. The composition was very basic for the most part but the more folk-oriented riffs were pretty good. Vocals were too gimmicky and just weren't very good. The lyrics were more crude than I would have liked. It did remind me of this though, lol:

Sounds AWESOME! Despite knowing very little synthwave, I LOVE the style, so mixing it with black metal is great! Beautiful, and I definitely appreciate that it doesn't try to be "dark" like some black metal hybrids. It sounds much better this way. My only complaint might be the vocals. The vocals themselves are fine, but I feel like they're a bit too "harsh" compared to the music, so they don't "match" as well as they potentially could. Will DEFINITELY be revisiting this.

Yet another interesting song, lol (it's as if this thread has become a contest to see who can find the strangest music). I liked this one! It felt very original and once again, I don't quite know what to call it...avant-garde industrial rock? The guitars and drums were fairly simple but that didn't bother me a whole lot because I really liked the synths. The song kept my attention the whole way but a little more variation in the vocals would have helped it a lot. I'll definitely check out more songs from this band.

That is a rather magnificent track. Lots of energy, a decent amount of variety. The rift from 20-30 seconds had me thinking "ok, CHANGE already!", but that's because it was just one note. The lead guitar that shows up later totally gave me a Mega Man X / Castlevania vibe, which is a VERY good thing in my opinion. "Asian metal" is so good. Fantastic melodies, structure and performance. I'm glad there are no vocals in this track, as I feel they would completely ruin everything.

The guitar riffs were melodic and atmospheric, ranging from mid-tempo to fast. The guitar mixed well with the added synths following the ambient bridge, with both complementing the atmosphere and neither totally over-powering the other. Overall, it seems to be decent atmospheric black metal.

The screams and keyboards aren't bad at all. The clean vocals are alright. I feel like the cymbals are a little too high in the mix. Which might sound random and nit-picky, but given the atmosphere they're [ostensibly?] trying to set up, I feel like a little more subdued percussion would help there. Overall, the "metal" sections of this don't do a lot for me. It's just kind of "there", to me. When the band goes outside of the "standard" framework and tries more experimental stuff, they keep my attention a lot more.

That's a neat song. I'd call it folk/black/death metal. I know I've heard of Bellor before but I think this is the first time I've actually heard one of their songs and I like it. The riffs didn't stand out to me much at all, but all of their synths and folk instruments are what made the song good. The clean vocals match the lighthearted atmosphere quite well. I especially like the ending with the piano, whispered/muttered vocals, and ambience. I love that kind of atmosphere (particularly whispered vocals in general) and they did a great job with it. I'm interested to hear more of their songs. In response to Thomas Eversole : I'm glad you like the UI-70 track. They're a band that does (primarily) metal covers of songs from Touhou games (a series of Japanese shoot-'em-ups for the PC). A lot of other bands cover Touhou songs too and you can find covers in just about any genre. Some of the metal I've found is just phenomenal and it's really cool seeing how different artists arrange their versions of each track. If you liked UI-70, you should check out Blankfield. This is his take on the same song: blankfield.bandcamp.com/track/the-princess-is-deadEdit: and here's idoyklik's metal version: idoyklik.bandcamp.com/track/bloodstained-scarlets

I was expecting post-black, which it is, but I see MA describes the project as "depressive black", and I can see why the band would be tagged like that. While most of the post-black I've heard seemed to be a pretty even mix of "beauty" and "depression", this song seems to emphasize "depressive" emotions a bit more than painting some kind of picture. Still very contemplative and overall nice. I definitely like it, for sure, it's just not something I'm really in the mood for at this moment. When I'm actually feeling depressed/tired out/etc, I'll probably be able to fully appreciate this song. I also like the cover art. I've said before that I wish more black metal would take influence from modern landscapes.

I don´t know why, but I instantly thought Nine inch nails(although I don´t listen to NIN); really didn't like the spoken vocals they clash with the sound of the instruments but as soon as he began growling/screaming it elevated the song on a different level. Am a big fan of electronic & industrial music so I enjoyed it a lot. Also liked the lyrics; thanks for the recommendation nocturnaliridescence

I enjoyed the song. The keyboards were obviously the main instrument and they did a good job with them. I liked the clean vocals at first but they got a little old by the end of the song. The song in general felt like it dragged on a little bit too much and it needed a few more ideas. Some tempo variation or maybe a section of the song where the drums and vocals drop and there's just keyboards would have been nice.

I LOVE the electronic and symphonic influences! Overall just a VERY epic song! Though the growls/screams left a little bit to be desired, and maybe the outro goes on a bit too long. I just cannot get over how much emotion and power there is here, though. ... Eh, I'm just gonna post something really weird again:

This sounds as if it's the intro to another song. I like it and I'm glad it's short. It creates a nice, mysterious atmosphere. I don't know the language of the vocals, but they sound pretty cool and distorted. I listened to another track on the album and it sounded like experimental electronic, and another track sounded oddly pop-oriented. Interesting...

Well played. I love the aggression, and for someone used to their aggression in the form of extreme metal, this packs quite a punch. I like the vocals and production and the structure is cool. The only thing I don't care for - its an under 2 minute track. I feel like I've just started really enjoying it then the song ends suddenly. Even just 30 seconds more (like the track below) makes a world of difference...

As much as I like punk and black metal, I've never been a fan of the two mixed together. As such, I'm not particularly fond of the crust punk elements of this song. But I really like everything after 1:15 when it takes on a more melodic death/black metal feel. I don't really like the Spanish language in metal but this isn't a big deal. Overall a good track for sure. In response to Thomas Eversole: The neat thing about that Ampere EP is the way it all flows together like one epic ten-minute track. Woodlawn is the longest song (and the best one in my opinion) so that's why I selected it for this thread, but it's really just a part of something greater. Alright, this next song is pretty weird and that's part of the reason why I like it so much. It's probably the poppiest thing that's been posted in this thread so far. The artwork is strange and doesn't match the music at all; I have no clue why the guy who uploaded this video chose it. (Also, lol at the fact he is using a portable CD player.) Anyway, try not to let the art (or the fact that it changes color for some reason) distract you; I recommend not looking at it while listening to the song.

So... the intro goes on for a very long time. I had no idea where this song was going at first, with all the ostensibly random things going on. In fact, the vocals have been going on for awhile now, and I'm still not sure where this song is going. It's not bad at all, just ... a bit difficult to process? Now there was a random glass shattering sound. Overall, I like the song, it's just very, very odd, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of structure here.

Starts of quite atmospheric; I expected some avantgarde or experimental ambient project, but the turn into anime music would have surprised me if the picture wasn't there. The vocals are not my cup of tea at all, but some of the musical elements get my gears going. Would have loved it if it stayed more atmospheric or went into a more industrial direction.

I usually don't like modern rap at all, but this was an incredible song! Extremely creative, well-written, and thought-provoking lyrics accompanied by genuinely good rap music that is honest and heartfelt is a recipe for success. I was utterly captivated by the song as I listened and read the lyrics. The beats he used sounded great and the vocals were nice and aggressive. I would go as far as to say this is my favorite song that I have discovered from this thread so far. Thank you very much for posting this, Borndead. I assume that K-Rino is a Christian artist (apparently he's Muslim) and I will definitely check out more of his music. Edit: I just realized that NI's song never got a response, so here are my thoughts on it. When it comes to electronic music, my attention span is typically pretty short and I prefer faster songs. This is a long, slow song which is obviously not what I prefer, but it was pretty good anyway. I like how symphonic and atmospheric it is and I'm glad they used a piano. I just think that it either needed more variety or needed to be shorter.

The K-Rino tune reminded me a bit of Immortal Technique's Point Of No Return.

@crimsonwarrior -- The song falls into a trap that a lot of symphonic songs seem to fall into -- the song starts of insanely bombastic and epic, but immediately calms down when the vocals start. Thankfully they pick back up and this turns into a very epic song! I like the mix of power metal and black metal elements. I feel that not enough bands use those influences.

I forgot how good Monolith is. They built an incredible atmosphere in that track, especially with the acoustic guitars. I really like the epic and dark, yet hopeful mood that the song creates. I suppose my biggest complaint is the clean vocals. They sound good, but the chorus in general is too cheery for the tone of the rest of the song. They do contribute to the atmosphere during the soft section in the back half of the track though. Great song, great band. Another Japanese song here, with a cheesy music video this time! I think this is fairly mainstream rock over in Japan but I really like this band and this song in particular.

Kinda generic, but still energetic and fun to listen to! Nice! ... I don't really have much more to say, "generic" and "energetic" pretty much sum it up for me. Except for those odd background sounds -- I can't tell if they're from a wah-wah pedal or a vocoder? Strange, but eh, I don't really mind.
