This is a moniker I've been using for the production of my music, all the way back to 1999 with GRIM - Scepter of Blood.
GRIM, Akryal, Breviarium, Hguols, Ankou Awaits, Orationem releases all have mention of this in most pressings.
I've been contemplating branching DGS out to help other bands. ...obviously, not until after surgery and to see how I do with 6 months of IV chemotherapy after that. (ugh)
Things that I could do to help other bands:
- Mastering services. I've mastered a handful of releases, back when I did that sort of thing. I've got better tools now actually...
- Artwork services. The logos and artwork for all releases I've done myself. (except Hguols Maunstraut and Depiction Under the Obscure Seclusion, I paid a 3rd party for that artwork, though I designed all logos)
- I can obviously do a 2 panel, on disc printing, slim case release myself. (ie: newest Orationem) ...but I have an account with a pressing company to do professional pressings.
- I also have an account regarding digital distribution through iTunes, AmazonMP3, Spotify, etc.
- Session musician. It wouldn't be hard for me to put synth to someone else's music or give a band drum tracks to practice record with.
- Any "label", no matter how small, is a prestigious banner.
...granted, I've done all these things for myself, but I could certainly do that for someone else trying to get their project off the ground.
Realistically, this would be a labor of love more than it would be for profit. ...and I think I would focus more on empowering artists to publish and sell their own music rather than have my own shop, with my own cut of their music, that they have already done themselves, etc. Obviously there would be some cost as I'd have to cover some expenses, but...
I'm thinking this would be based more on Christian metal production (artwork, mastering, pressings) that go directly to the artist, rather than them figuring it out themselves and I sell their merch in my shop. (don't get me wrong, I'm definitely glad to have that since I CAN do everything myself)
What do you think? Great idea? Stupid idea?
I really only have 2 concerns.
1) Getting inundated with requests. It sounds like even small labels have their fair share of daily "Listen to my music!" type correspondence from artists trying to get that label "banner".
2) While I've "sold" artwork and mastering services in the past - there are bands that didn't like what I had to offer, for one reason or another. Its discouraging to get a big fat "no" after several times of trying.
Neither concern is the end of the world, and wouldn't stop me from doing this...
...realistically, I would want public opinion on this, that it would be a good idea or something needed rather than another one of Tom's crazy ideas he has.
