Verdelger - In Het Holst Van De Zwarte Nacht Year: 2002 Genre: Raw Black Metal "I am William Wallace, and I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny..." Movie sampling is certainly something that is unusual for black metal, but Verdelger decided to do it on this demo, and they did it a lot. Quite a bit of audio from Braveheart is included here. An entire two-minute intro track of Braveheart is included before you even hit the meat of the demo. I guess it creates a pretty good mood and some atmosphere, but it just seems so weird. A couple other samples are included later on in the demo. The music is about equally strange. This is harsh, noisy, relentless black metal, often with very shrill and shrieking guitars, and vocals that sometimes deteriorate from growls to screams (and I don't mean metal screaming; I mean going down the first hill of a roller coaster screaming). Everything is too loud - the guitars, the drums, and the vocals. Everything is distorted, frantic, and abrasive. And the chaos just goes on and on, for about seventeen minutes, occasionally giving you a little break with Braveheart sampling. Honestly, I kinda like it; most of the riffs (but not all) are pretty good, but sometimes too simple (especially in "Satanic Lamentation"). I think this demo would be hit or miss for most people. Those who enjoy raw black metal like Fire Throne and Tertullian and want to take it a step rawer might find satisfaction here. I personally find it somewhat enjoyable, but only when I'm in the mood for it, which isn't all that often. 72/100 -CrimsonWarrior Buy it from Metal Helm: metalhelm.com/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&cPath=1&products_id=41

I love this demo!
Are you reviewing a physical CD, by any chance? The songs are even louder on those than they are online. I genuinely had no idea that music could be produced so loudly on a CD, I assumed there had to be some kind of cutoff point. If there is, it's louder than I thought!

I'm reviewing the ripped tracks that I have on my computer, which probably sound similar to what you can find online. I never have actually put the CD into a player. I'll have to try that someday.

CDs are louder/clearer than even 320kbs MP3s. ...but it makes perfect sense to me because MP3s, 320kbs is the highest bitrate. WAVs have a bitrate of 1411kbs as a standard and can actually go much higher...
