Of Christian Gothic
(Theology Paper)
If you are thinking to yourself, Christian Gothic? Is there such a thing? Read the following and become fully enlightened about the theology of your friendly neighborhood Christian Goth!
The first thing that must be mentioned is one of the main themes of this culture. The Love of Death. Yet that sounds opposing to Christianity, doesn't it? Not so, for in Christianity when someone accepts Christ into their heart, they become DEAD TO SELF. The old man has died, and we are a new creation in Jesus. Yet my flesh still tries to crawl into control for the flesh wars with the spirit. Understanding also, that it is appointed man once to die and face judgment to us, means that upon dying to our flesh, we recieve the judgment of grace, and when our bodies die, we only fall asleep.
So if you think altar calls are really funeral calls, for another one bit the dust, and if you believe you are alive in Christ and a flesh corpse simultaneaously as the living dead, you might want to realize, there are others who feel the same way!
Now the analogies of the flesh nature warring with the spirit with corpse analogies might seem morbid at times, yet the more specific morbidity it is, still has a christian dead to self that Christ might live teaching behind it.
For example, the notorious band leper, a christian gothic darkwave band from Ohio wrote the song Lyken off the album "And Everybody Died" In it we see the example of which our flesh nature if not murdered transforms us into abominable beasts which crave death and destruction, and the grace of God lets us become changed back into the way we should.
The bible talks about our flesh as carnal beasts bent on evil desires. Our own actions can be very savage, yet when we die to self, so Christ may live we are examples of life.
Yes we do drink blood and eat flesh, the blood and flesh of Christ, for you cannot be saved unless you drink and eat Christ's flesh and blood. Even bathing ourselves in blood, the blood of the lamb. So songs come with titles like Drink blood and die, etc. IT may seem morbid, but let's put it in context.
Remember that just because a song title seems dark, for example; the "exaltation of filth", keep in mind that so many song lyrics is about how this way of living in exalting filth leads to pain and agony and desperation, so choose Christ instead!
There is so much romance in Christ's death for us, and for a great deal of Christian Gothic talk about this romantic death and our own death in romance, even for each other.
Stabbing your neighbor as yourself seems a little crazy right? Wrong! Administer the word of God and you are stabbing your neighbors flesh nature like you should do to your own. To kill someone is to lead them to Christ, or perhaps like the evanesence song tourniquet, you want to die a self-righteous suicide!
Corpse paint represents the fact we are dead to our flesh, and also for some Unblack and Christian death metalists as war paint as well. For now we will move to the next dimension.
We are allowed to hate three things as Christians, The Devil, The World, And the Flesh. Hate the world or HTW might seem anarchy sounding, yet as a Christian it is centered about our rebellion against the tyranny of opressing tyranny, etc, for you must remember it is written in God's Word, Friendship with the world is enemies with Christ. If your a Christian and Don't HTW, you are an enemy of Christ! You are commanded to Hate The World! So thus that was established by God, which leads us to the third point.
Hate the devil. To see severed heads of demons and pictures of bloody gore of even demon severed heads might make you think how is that something pleasing unto God? Yet in the blessed book of Psalms it is written how the King (Christ) will dip his feet in his enemies blood. The psalms show that there is nothing to raw to be brought before God.
We are savages and barbaric against the devil the world and the flesh. Many Christian Goth's have an ancestry of savage warriors and utilize this against the devil the world and the flesh. And they aren't afraid to scream it.
Some screams can't be understood, true, yet the holy spirit communicates to God with deep grumbling, unable to be understood, for that also is written in God's word.
Some Christian Goths take the revelation end times approach to the world of Christian Goths, just like Erik Clayton's band "SAvIOUR MACHINE", etc.
Yet a big part of Christian Goths is Sorrow. Now in today's world Christianity seems to be uplifting to an extreme because people want to give others hope, yet it sometimes can give people the impression that Christ is Just a mask of trying to have no problems when you really do have issues, just like everyone on earth. I have never heard a choir sing psalm 88, a despairing lament psalm, like many psalms and psalm 88 ends on the line, my closest friend is darkness. Sorrow for others who are lost in mourning and to represent the constant funeral of the flesh is why so many Christian Goths wear and are obsessed with black clothing.
Keeping these things in mind and in context you can see that there are Christian Goths, and that in our wonderful culture we still are very much Christians!
Now that you have learned about CHristian Gothic Theology, and if you yourself might feel some of these tendencies, or if this described who you are, welcome to accepting us, or joining us and our culture and may you die with us, that maggots might eat thy flesh so that Christ may live all the more as your flesh rots as the living dead.
Praise Jesus.
