The new Ep was released today on Sky Burns Black Bancamp1. The Squirm of Deserved Ascoma 5:07 2. Wolfsbane and Ivy 5:44 3. Withering Into The Autumn-Rot 8:31 4. Rite 6:17 I expected a change in direction with the loss of their guitar player Curtis McTeigue. I thought The Supernal Hunger was amazing! It had some truly unique writing and was incredibly dark yet powerfully, positively moving lyrically. They mentioned how Curtis was a different kind of player/writer and I expected different. How did it turn out? What do you say? I'm only a few listens in.

Throne of Awful Splendor's lyrics stood out more to me than their music. Not that the music was bad, it's just, wow, the lyrics. Listening to a bit of it now, and it does seem slightly more subdued than their first EP. Though that seems to be more a production thing than a guitar thing.
I'll have to listen to this a bit more before I say too much. At first listen, it just seems... inoffensive, mostly. But it just seems like there should be more to this music than I'm getting out of it.

Yeah. Listened 4 times today and none of them in a concentrated way. Nothing stuck. That doesn't say much really but the odd rhythms on the debut's title track did surprise and the epic, dark center of Luciphilosophaster took my notice immediately. I was hoping for a few arresting moments. If I had the lyrics in front of me that would help. I'm surprised they're not posted considering their recent post about how much lyrics mattered to them. We'll see.
On the basics, the drumming is again fantastic! Love the fills and the switching from blasts to rhythms at a moment's notice. Still love the vocals. The production isn't very live but it's full and you can really hear the bass work. I'll be cranking this through the summer! It'll sound great, windows down. I'm not openly surprised by anything except Rite which has a much different feel than anything they've done. It's melodic. Not sure how well they do it.
All initial thoughts but I think this'll turn out well. I actually loved the debut. It's an absolute favorite, so expectations make sophomore albums earn their keep. I've got to get over "what I wanted" to hear and enjoy what it is.

I prefer The Supernal Hunger maybe this new one is a grower, but I don't enjoy it enough immediately to buy it. Sorry if the band reads this lol I have to be honest.

Listening to this tonight. Really starting to enjoy it. Wolfsbane and Ivy is pure Opeth worship though. It's back to the Still Life days.
