I've been into metal about twelve years. Honestly, my gateway band was probably Aerosmith. That led me further down the path of hard rock until I eventually got into metal. Favorite metal band is Sabaton, hands down. I haven't been to any metal concerts. No bands come here. I think the last band worth noting that played in Fredericton was, strangely enough, Aerosmith. I'm particular to Power Metal. I'm really not into Metalcore's more extreme forms. We're talking Deathcore, Grindcore, and it only gets worse from there. My brother is half-metalhead. My best friend is really into Nu-Metal and Symphonic Metal, but his favorites are Nightwish, Hammerfall, Manowar, and Sabaton. Subgenres, oh boy. Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal, Symphonic Metal, Metalcore, Nu Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal, Alternative Metal, Avante-Garde Metal, Thrashcore, Deathcore, Grindcore, Goregrind, Sludge Metal, Speed Metal, Stoner Metal, Glam Metal, Groove Metal, Trance Metal, Industrial Metal, Cyber Metal, and any mix of all of these. Every beginner should check out Iron Maiden. My least favorite thing about the subculture is... how closely and quickly related to Satan it is. But what I love about it is that anyone can join. There are always elitists, but most metalheads will be overjoyed to see anyone join in, regardless of who you are or where your from or what you believe. Gonna have to say Metallica beats the rest of the Big 4, but Megadeth is close. I do not own any band shirts, unfortunately. I love collecting CDs. I like being a metalhead. For some people, I suppose it's a lifestyle, sure, but for me it's a part of a lifestyle. It's the audio part.

how long have you been into metal I've listened to metal for most of my life, but I took a break from music for a few years. I got "back" into it in 2005. What band was your gateway band Black Sabbath What is your favorite metal band Right now, I'd have to say Dominus Dominantium. How long have you been into metal - Not sure. I grew up on 80's hard rock/glam metal. I'd say my older brother and I crossed into metal in 92-93 buying Metallica, Megadeth, Maiden, Anthrax in those years. I was 12-13 yrs old then. What band was your gateway band - to get me to extreme metal? Sepultura "Chaos A.D." and then Obituary "Back from the Dead." Otherwise it was listening to Def Leppard back in 87 on Mtv. (Oldness!) What is your favorite metal band - used to be Blind Guardian. Since I left secular music, Extol. How many concerts have you been to - 100s but not many since giving my life to the Lord. I bring my wife these days. Favorite metal subgenre - was power metal followed by thrash but where those genres were in the 1,000s of bands in secular metal, they are lacking in Christian metal. Death Metal these days. Whats your least favorite subgenre - Numetal/Rap metal. I like how Disciple and Demon Hunter evolved. I can't listen to their early material. Hated this stuff in the 90's. Do you have any metalhead friends - Yes. Just a few. Lost almost all when I devoted my life to Christ. They "lost respect for me." Name as many bands - Not going to do this. Would take forever! Name as many subgenres - Also no. What is one metal band every beginner should check out - Christian? Disciple - an easy starter, not too heavy, not too much screaming Least favorite thing about the subculture - That the Christian market is intentionally overlooked. I was confused back in the day why a band like Crimson Moonlight were 100% ignored in the mainstream. I loved their album "Veil of Remembrance" and compared it in quality to my favorites like Dawn "Slaughtersun," Borknagar "Empiricism," Enslaved "Eld" but no one cared. I could mention them on a secular board like this and it was like I'd said nothing at all. What is your favorite - Community What is your favorite out of the big 4 - Megadeth no question. Love guitar solos and Marty and Dave crushed it all for me. Rust In Peace is a top 5 album. My favorite thrash band was Overkill though, followed by Sodom. How many band shirts do you own - 50-60, much to the chagrin of my wife. That's after throwing away all my secular shirts. Had to replace the wardrobe. Do you collect cds, vinyls, or cassettes? - CD's. See the previous comment about my wife. Have owned over 3,000 in my life (bought, sold, traded, trashed) and had 1,600 before throwing them all away in 2010. Now maybe 800 Christian CDs. Do you like being a metalhead and do you consider it a lifestyle? - I like being a metalhead. It's not a lifestyle for me anymore. I'm too many other things today, a husband, father, middle school science teacher, pastor, etc. Great post idea!

how long have you been into metal - Since mid-late 70's What band was your gateway band - I wouldn't count them as metal now, but as a little kid, it was definitely KISS. What is your favorite metal band - Never had just one favorite, but Opeth and Periphery are consistently up there. How many concerts have you been to - hundreds of all genres What is your favorite metal subgenre - don't have one, I love most all of them! Whats your least favorite subgenre - nu-metal Do you have any metalhead friends - not anymore Name as many bands as you can off the top of your head - no thanks, I don't have that kinda time ;-) Name as many subgenres off the top of your head - see above What is one metal band every beginner should check out - Black Sabbath, because beginners in anything should study the history of their interest What is your least favorite thing about the subculture - elitism What is your favorite - community What is your favorite out of the big 4 - don't listen to any of them anymore, but I have the most respect for Slayer How many band shirts do you own - not as many as I used to, less than 10 Do you collect cds, vinyls, or casettes? - CDs, pared down from around 5000 at one point to a couple hundred today. Do you like being a metalhead and do you consider it a lifestyle? - yes, but I don't see it as a lifestyle on it's own. It's just part of mine.

how long have you been into metal - Since 2008, when I was 15 years old What band was your gateway band - Linkin Park, although they´re not 100% metal, but they pulled me to check out bands like Metallica. What is your favorite metal band - It´s very hard to choose just one so I´ll just say Bathory and Bethlehem How many concerts have you been to - around 10+/-, would love to go and see more bands...but very often my job gets in the way or my secluded nature What is your favorite metal subgenre - by far black metal, but folk metal is also up in the top 3 Whats your least favorite subgenre - glam metal (if you can call it metal) Do you have any metalhead friends - a few buddys wouldn´t really call them friends Name as many bands as you can off the top of your head - would take to long, used to habe battles with my brother who could name more Name as many subgenres off the top of your head - hmm nooope xD What is one metal band every beginner should check out - depends on the person, I usually ask people what the listen to and like and then I point them into a band that has some elemens of it..Some bands that I showed beginners were Nightwish, Kamelot, Sabaton, Korpiklaani, Eluviete, going for very melodid and not so extreme stuff is usually my approach What is your least favorite thing about the subculture - elitism and in general arrogant and annoying people What is your favorite - the music, and the look you give each other when You pass a metalhead in a band shirt haha What is your favorite out of the big 4 - Metallica by far, also would drop Anthrax for Testament haha (just my opinion) How many band shirts do you own - hmm if I´m not mistaken around 7-10 (to mention some bands: Saor, Deathspell Omega, Ahab, Ahzidal(made their logo)..)) Do you collect cds, vinyls, or casettes? - used to collect cds (have around 200) but started collecting vinyl (have around 60), also have some tapes, floppy disks and other goodies bands have send me Do you like being a metalhead and do you consider it a lifestyle? - used to be very proud of being a "real" metalhead, but now "label" myself as a "eclectic music lover" enjoyed this post a lot

avjr There are a couple "underground" glam bands I know, that I thought you might like. I just remembered them. Glass, and Amaranth. Glass are normal secular stuff (and they've gotten a fair bit of popularity in recent years! That video is up to 450,000 views now!), and I've heard Amaranth are Christian, but can't understand most of their lyrics.

Not sure I really count Glam Metal as 'Metal'. Like, it's on the border between Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, basically.

Post by frozenfire on Aug 18, 2018 16:18:34 GMT -6
Generally I call it all 80's hard rock. It's a more fitting term. Not all of it is "glam." I think that term is deroggatory when applied to the whole and ignores that many of the band's had that look pushed on them and ignores that many have incredible merit beyond that label. I grew up with Poison. That was glam. However bands like Tesla and Cinderella, without that label, would find themselves right alongside Aerosmith as classic American rock bands if they hadn't come from that era. Other bands like Dokken and Stryper were far more metal than many of their peers.
If you could honestly listen to Tesla "The Great Radio Controversy," Cinderella "Heartbreak Station," L.A. Guns "Hollywood Vampires" and say those bands didn't have merit or that a band like Extreme with albums like Pornograffiti and III Sides To Every Story were talentless drivel I'd say you're out of your mind.
We scoff but if you listen you find something else in many cases. There is garbage but there is real quality material too. Doesn't mean you'll like it but it shouldn't all be disregarded.

many of the band's had that look pushed on them Exactly. This happened to Bon Jovi as well. I'm a fan of Bon Jovi and Europe more than anything else from that 'genre'. But all of those bands were either Hard Rock or Heavy Metal. I think it would be safe to say that Glam Metal is more based on the appearance of the band and less on what they actually sound like. One thing I don't appreciate very much is when genres are defined by things other than what the music sounds like. (Glam Metal, Christian Rock, Visual Kei) If it's going to be its own thing, there should be a musical reason.

The only difference I notice between "glam" and "heavy metal", for the most part, is that glam musicians sang with much higher-pitched voices. And, I guess, that glam had less of a "bite" to it than normal metal.
Not really sure if that's enough to warrant a whole genre tag, but I'm not really concerned.

how long have you been into metal What band was your gateway band What is your favorite metal band How many concerts have you been to What is your favorite metal subgenre Whats your least favorite subgenre Do you have any metalhead friends Name as many bands as you can off the top of your head Name as many subgenres off the top of your head What is one metal band every beginner should check out What is your least favorite thing about the subculture What is your favorite What is your favorite out of the big 4 How many band shirts do you own Do you collect cds, vinyls, or cassets? Do you like being a metalhead and do you consider it a lifestyle? I'll try, too...
how long have you been into metal It started in 1997 when a school friend of me gave an album he discovered and thought I might like it.
What band was your gateway band
Einherjer. The album this friend of mine gave me was "Dragons of the north". I then discovered Enslaved. I think those two where my gateway bands. And Blind Guardian, who appealed to my liking of fantasy.
What is your favorite metal band Hm... these days maybe DauÞuz. But I always like to discover new stuff, so my favourite bands are never set in stone becoming eternal emperors of my playlist.
How many concerts have you been to
Metal concerts? Not so many. I think I've watched more punk or hardcore shows. Regretable in some way. Anyway I am not much of a concert goer today. I dislike greater amounts of people, dislike having my backpack searched through by some securities at the entry, dislike having to stand for too long because my legs start to hurt... I don't know. I'd like to see some nice and small shows over the next years nevertheless.
What is your favorite metal subgenre
Black Metal. Most favourite Epic- Symphonic- Melodic- Black Metal. Stuff that makes you want to throw stuff out the window and to plunder the neighbourhood, haha.
Whats your least favorite subgenre Brutal death metal maybe?
Do you have any metalhead friends Not really. A good friend of mine is also a great fan of Black Metal since his early teens, but I don't see him very often. Once a year or so. And another guy I still know from school. I don't see him too much either. And I can't say if he still listens to much metal today. Anyway, seems I do not have very much friends anyway. Haha.
Name as many bands as you can off the top of your headNein, danke! Name as many subgenres off the top of your headNee, ey, mach ich auch nicht. Wofür denn?
What is one metal band every beginner should check out Depends on the beginner. Maybe Isengard? Yeah... for sure Isengard. And after Isengard something nice. Maybe a good Blind Guardian Album. Nightfall in middle earth.
What is your least favorite thing about the subculture Elitarism and cliches.
What is your favorite
It gives people an opportunity to put also dark feelings and emotions into music. Also you don't have to be smart or beautiful. I also in some way like the non-political-correctness approach in some corners of (black) metal.
What is your favorite out of the big 4 Beethoven. Or Stalin.
How many band shirts do you own Today just one. I used to have more, five or six, when I was a teen. I'd like to get some more anyway. But I am not a very huge subcultural dresser. Sometimes I look like I am working in a bank. But I don't care much.
Do you collect cds, vinyls, or cassets? I used to collect cds, but not for the sake of collecting but because I liked to listen to music. I sold some cds some time ago and gave the money for a childrens programm in our church. Frankly I am a bit of bored with the elitarism of some record collectors. Vinyl here. Vinyl there. "Oh you don't own the limited first pressing of xxxx by yyyy? You don't know anything about music!". So what. Today I see music more as a gift to lift your spirit, to enjoy, to free oneself from everyday's bondages. Something that puts you beyond, on a, say, more spiritual level. But music for me is not a godlike thing.
Do you like being a metalhead and do you consider it a lifestyle? I'd be honoured to be called a metal head. But I guess I am just a loner and a nerd and never was something else. A lifestyle? Everthing is a lifestyle, isn't it? Things we like influence the way we live out our lifes. So if you are a fervent hobby baker of vegan cakes or a metalhead... both a lifestyle. But maybe I just didn't get the question right.

You know, there are this kind of nerds who, after dropping out from the mainstream, become some kind of well-respected "scene personality" somewhere. Not here. Shot by both sides. Eh, the underground really isn't much different from the mainstream. The differences are mostly aesthetic. In the mainstream, people put their faces (or make "sexy" poses, etc) on their cover artwork to get sales. In the underground, people just make really their artwork really obscure (vague forests, no band name, etc) to get sales. In the mainstream, people like outgoing, happy, sociable people. If you're not like that, you tend to be an outcast. In the underground, people like angry, antisocial, miserable people. If you're not like that, you tend to be an outcast. In the mainstream, people like bright, vibrant colors. In the underground, people like dark colors, ... and black. Etc.
