So... I wanted to get you guys's thoughts on this, because I feel kind of weird about how Demon Hunter is making this happen.
They just announced their new album, War & Peace. It's coming out in May, it's actually TWO albums, and you can preorder it right now. Deluxe edition, vinyls, CDs, shirts, etc....
But no music. We literally have the whole tracklisting and the opportunity to preorder it, but no samples of the music...
Does everyone remember when Judas Priest did that double-album they did, Nostradamus, and that it wasn't very well received? I'm getting vibes of that right now. I personally really liked Demon Hunter's last album, Outlive, and feel that this new album might be a two-hour riff-fest of half-baked songs and angsty, though Christian, lyrics.
Also also, they're bringing back The Blessed Resistance, and membership now requires a monthly payment of either $7 or $10 bucks, giving you the same access to their demos, blogs, etc. just like they did before. This time it requires roughly the same amount of money as your Netflix account.
Does anybody else feel weird about what Demon Hunter is doing these days?

I don’t feel weird about it. I mean, the band members have families, full-time jobs, and other priorities I do not know. I can’t wait to get the 2 albums from them in March. Every time I listened to their music, it brings me back to my high school and college years. They are the first Christian Metal band I listen to. The first and the last time I saw them it was at The Glass House, Pomona, California. I had a blast! Hehe. I’ll never know if I will see them again. I am proud to be a DH fan.

Keep in mind, too -- how much of this is their doing, and how much of it is the label's doing? I haven't kept up with Demon Hunter over the past few years (or any of the bands on Solid State) but when you get signed to bigger labels like that, they seem to start making more and more of the decisions.

Yeah I agree, I just think it's weird that they would let everyone preorder it before hearing even a snippet of a song from either of the albums. I'm sure many other bands have done this, but this is a first for Demon Hunter as far as I know. I don’t feel weird about it. I mean, the band members have families, full-time jobs, and other priorities I do not know. I can’t wait to get the 2 albums from them in March. Don't get me wrong, my feelings probably won't get in the way of me preordering this once I have the funds. I still love DH and appreciate the influence they've had on my faith and my taste in music over the years. Even if it ends up being a turd of a DH album, it'll be better than most music coming out this year, guaranteed.

They finally decided to unveil some of the music from the new albums. One from each one:
What do y'all think?

Why is that first song so bright and happy sounding??? Where's the screaming? Like, it's not a bad sound at all -- they've used it before for short sections of songs, and bands like Crucify the Flesh have done it really well -- but for an entire Demon Hunter song, that's just strange. Oh my goodness, I'm listening to the second song now, and... Well, admittedly I'm not the BIGGEST fan of this band, so, maybe these albums just aren't meant for me. Maybe their style changed a lot since I lost touch with them. The last album of theirs I own is from 11 years ago, granted... But man, I'm just confused here. This is even more cheerful and frolicky than the first one.

I like those songs! They’re not the greatest, but they are worth listening to. DH might release 2 new music videos in the following months.

My thoughts on it: I definitely like On My Side better than Peace, just because it's heavier and has a more catchy chorus. The chorus actually sounds like Disturbed if they had a better singer. Other than that, the guitar is fairly simplistic compared to many of their songs from Outlive.
Peace automatically reminds me of DH's song "Thorns", in that I don't really like that song either. The keyboards kind of remind me of a cheesier Dark Tranquillity.
Overall, I think they're placing more emphasis on catchy choruses this time around and less on making the songs sound creative. I think I'll like both albums, but I'm not expecting these to be their best albums. I think Outlive had more creativity and body to it. I hope the other songs prove me wrong.

I think the guitar work was more creative in that album than in these songs, but again, we haven't heard the rest of the album, so I hope the other songs can prove me wrong.
