I think it'd be kinda neat to build a "must-have" list for people getting into CBM to check out first. I can continually update and edit this first post as we compile the list, but for now I won't start with anything since only I have shared my ideas without any chance to see your replies. If an album gets a few nominations, I'll add it to the list.
Here are ones that I would nominate:
Admonish - Insnarjd Antestor - The Return of the Black Death Antestor - The Forsaken Crimson Moonlight - The Covenant Progress Crimson Moonlight - Veil of Remembrance Drottnar - Welterwerk Evroklidon - The Flame of Sodom Grave Declaration - When Dying Souls Scream Praise Horde - Hellig Usvart Lengsel - Solace Sanctifica - Spirit of Purity Shadows of Paragon - Through the Valley Within Vials of Wrath - Days Without Names
Here are the main criteria that I considered as I made that list: 1. Has the album gained a fair bit of attention (for the standards of our scene)? 2. Is the album fairly easy to acquire (not super rare)? 3. Has the album been around for some time? (Admittedly, there are a few on my list that are more recent.)
What albums do you guys nominate?

Admittedly, I haven't heard a lot of those. Happy to see VoW on the list because DC's music was my gateway into this genre. I would nominate hesychast.bandcamp.com/album/agelessbecause I think it stands alone as a masterpiece of an album, and really solidified for me that the artistic vision and execution within the CBM community was on par with any secular genre.

Cool thread. Seeing as I think of Frost Like Ashes as a CBM staple, I'll go ahead and sit down now.

I would add a Slechtvalk album as I feel like they are an amazing example of the versatility of black metal and the virtuosity of the artist/artists (depending on which album you choose).
In the most unpopular opinion ever, I would also include "Hortor- Ancient Satanic Rituals are Crushed in Dust" because, even though they have the business scruples of the Trumpster, they are an amazing group

I second Bartimaeus and Borndead , though I'll be transparent and say I have tried listening to AHTDU a few times and I don't really feel it but I know many others love them.

A hill to die upon - Holy Despair _ I really enjoy AHTDU but feel that they put the death in blackened death metal, rather than a true hybrid (ie, later Crimson Moonlight, Antestor - Omen). It totally changed my perspective on them when I saw them in that light. My opinion, but I think "Infinite Titanic Immortal" is the most black of their albums.

It's pretty subjective. It seems like overall, I tend to like different music than what most of the black metal scene likes. If we were talking about what mostly seems to be liked among black metal fans, I would probably just say what was written in the original post. Albums that got me into the scene, and I would consider "essential", are:
Antestor - The Forsaken Diamoth - Distorkion Divine Symphony - The History O Majestic Winter - Defiling the Serpents Temple Wintersoul - Frozen Storm Apocalypse Winter's Dawn - Wandering Through the Realm of Frosted Beauty Emperador - Emperador Hortor - Dios de Dioses (business practices aside...) Armageddon Holocaust - Into Total Destruction Elgibbor - War Verdelger - In het holst van de zwarte nacht Nephesh - Hated by This World Torches in the Void - Through the Black

I'll add a vote for Slechtvalk, probably The War That Plagues The Lands and At The Dawn Of War. Frost Like Ashes - Tophet has gotten a lot of attention so probably fits your criteria. A Hill To Die Upon - Infinite Titanic Immortal and Omens would both be essential CBM I think.

Quest For Serenity - Moonlight Worship
As for the Slechtvalk album above mentioned, it has to be;
Slechtvalk - The War That Plagues the Lands
And a newer band;
Ohen - Mortal Man (A new released that changed me with its awesomeness)

Personally
Semper Reformanda by Vials of Wrath Holy Despair or Ars Via, Ars Mortis (?) by AHTDU Ageless by Hesychast Tetragrammaton by Temple of Perdition
Those are the albums I go back to. A lot of the classic CBM like Antestor, Horde, and Crimson Moonlight is too second-wave for me. I prefer more atmospheric stuff.

I do like "Demo 10", it sounds good, and I deeply respect the meaning behind it. But I prefer the sound of, for example, "Demo 15" or "Stigma". As for other people... It's hard to say. There wasn't much publicity surrounding its release, so maybe people just haven't heard it yet... I do think a LOT of people would like it. (For those wondering, this is what we're talking about.)

Same with Hierurgy by Panegyrist. Both bands have clear Christian themes, but neither band is really part of the Christian scene.

Oh heck yes! This album really coheres as an album and not just a set of seven random songs. It's also interesting that this band came up with the formula of Orthodox Chants + Black Metal before Batushka I and did a better job of it in my opinion.
