I follow the Christian (black) metal scene pretty closely, but I don't follow the mainstream black metal scene closely, so I don't know what's good that's out there. So I made this thread so I could update myself on what's new and cool in the scene. I prefer Cascadian/Atmospheric Black Metal--I could listen to Wolves in the Throne Room rip-offs all day. One of my favorite artists from that scene is NONE. I just downloaded their album The Damp Chill of Life the other day, although I haven't listened to it. I also really liked the band The Haunting Green--I have their album Natural Extinctions and it sounds like a thunderstorm. Anyway, curious on what y'all are discovering or rediscovering.

Der Weg Einer Freiheit has been my favorite band for a while. Even though their new "Live in Berlin" isn't new songs, its a new recording.... (live = more raw, more raw = better IMO)
Many, many listens.

I liked that Der Weg Einer Freiheit decently enough. I listened to Immortal for the first time today (At the Heart of Winter or something like that). It sounded like blackened Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. I also listened to False, which was pretty sweet.

Agalloch - You Were But A Ghost In My Arms (haven´t listened to this in a long time) Les Discrets - Les Regrets (had this as my morning alarm for years) Summoning - Long Lost to Where No Pathway Goes Wolvserpent - Serpent (saw them live with Wolves in the throne room like 6-7 years ago, was a killer show) Skyforest - Autumnal Embrace (played the tim whistle on here, very atmospheric piece) Drudkh - Summoning The Rain & Glare Of Autumn

Looks like we have very similar tastes in black metal. Glad to hear, although I listen to a wide range of music, lately I´ve been on folk music and orthodox chants.. but always looking for something new

I also listened to False, which was pretty sweet. I listened to their new Portient album TWICE... and I tried, tried and tried to like it. But I cant get any more enjoyment out of it. The instrumentation and vocals sound excellent, the song structure is complex, almost confusing at times (not a bad thing), blasts to doom and back again... All good... But man, it's all kind of sloppy. I mean, I felt like the drummer just kind of went. Extra long fill here. Extra short one there. And the guitar writing gets lost because I hear them more recover to the timing, than I do the hooks from the melody emotion. -_-

You listened to them a lot more than I did. I just listened to one song.

Oh, this is a great thread! Thank you for starting it! A band which I recently discovered (from the tipps-section in a mag called "Waldhalla") are Ungfell from Switzerland. They are most likely correct described as "folk black metal". I think of buying their recent album "Mythen, Mären, Pestilenz" ("Myths, Tales, Pestilence") in which they deal with dark-edge-legends from Switzerland. It is mostly a solo + 1 project from a guy calles "Menetekel". I somehow got, I have to say, disturbed by their usage of an inverted cross somewhere in the artwork, but the band is not satanic in their songs and after reading some interviews with Menetekel I think that this guy just has a kind of sick humor not unusual in the black metal scene. If you like to check out: Ungfell - Mythen, Mären, Pestilenz(Ah... "Ungfell" seems to be an old word from Switzerland's special german dialect, which means something like misadventure or harm. I like this fact, because it is somehow similar to the high german word "Unfall", which today means simply "Accident" (like in car accident), but in earlier times had the same meaning... there's a line in an old church song "Sein Wort, sein Tauf', sein Nachtmahl, hilft wider allen Unfall..." (His word, His baptism, His supper - a help against all kind of harm"... so... here we are again on christian territory and I shall shut up now Enjoy the music!)

New Mgla is out and I'm jamming it right now. I'm enjoying it right now. My only point of reference for its sound is A Hill to Die Upon, but it is much less poppy and death-y than AHTDU's newer work, though both bands have very good lyrics. Mgla's lyrical themes seem to be the nihilism inherent in an atheist worldview--on that point I would agree with them, I'm just not an atheist.
I somehow got, I have to say, disturbed by their usage of an inverted cross somewhere in the artwork, but the band is not satanic in their songs I think a lot of metal bands incorporate inverted crosses, pentagrams, etc. because it's a "metal" thing to do, their mom doesn't like it, etc. rather than having any specific agenda. Falls of Rauros, for example, has an inverted cross in their logo, but I don't remember anything specifically Satanist or anti-Christian about their music. I try not to take it any more serious than the artist in question takes it. Still pisses me off though.

I listened to some tracks from The Forsaken[ by Antestor yesterday. What an awesome band. How have I slept on these guys for so long?
I also saw two local black metal bands the other day. One was a slightly proggy "space black metal" band called Tel Anorath. They were pretty good. The other was a blackened deathcore band. They had some slightly dissonant arpeggiated riffs (blackened) and they kind of seemed like tools (deathcore).

I avoided listening to Antestor, intially, because they were so popular without really giving thought as to why that would be. I'm glad my pride got out of the way because Forsaken and ROTBD/Kongsblod are some of my favorite albums, period. I think you'd enjoy a lot of the artists on Antiq Records. I particularly like Vehemence, who are sort of an Medieval black metal band.

I'm listening to Saor right now and they're awesome. Black metal mixed with Celtic/Scottish folk in a way that sounds very organic and unforced. If anyone knows any other bands that sound like this, let me know (I'm counting on you nocturnaliridescence).

Today's listen--"Argoat" by Belenos. Not sure how I feel about the whole "pagan metal" thing. I know some of it definitely has a strong "f--- you, Christians" message to it, but I'm fine with it if it's just fiction or someone presenting their views without trashing mine.

nocturnaliridescence Not really. I don't like listening to stuff that's like "f--- Christians" or "Hail Satan," not so much due to convictions as due to it not being entertaining to me. But I don't have any problem with people just expressing their views in music. Metal is really the only genre where I listen to a lot of Christian bands. But if you do know any Christian bands that sound like Saor I would be interested. I post a lot of "Christian bands that sound like X" posts on Facebook groups, and it irks me when someone says "just listen to X." I do listen to them. I don't have a problem with them. I like their sound, and want to support bands in the Christian scene that have a similar sound. Similar. Not exactly the same.

Bad news: I can't think of any other bands that sound like Saor -- Christian or secular. Good news: I found a cool lo-fi black metal EP. It's from band called (surprise surprise) Батюшка, but despite being an obvious joke like most of these Batushka clones, the music is pretty good! Fans of TRVEKVLT music should check this out!

A few days ago I discovered "Blaze of Sorrow" (http://blazeofsorrow.bandcamp.com/) from Italy. Got to listen to their music because my eyes got caught by some very nice shirt-design of theirs. Great stuff! After listening through their album "Echi" and some additional tracks various times I decided to buy the shirt and also "Echi" or another of their albums.

Scanned the thread, didn’t see this one posted yet:
Cloak, from Atlanta, GA, USA. I’m hearing people call it “black and roll”, and comparing them to Tribulation.....but I catch STRONG bits of recent AHTDU, some Dissection, and some Watain.....and I’m REALLY digging it.
This is gonna be one of those years where two of my all time favorites (Abbath and Amon Amarth) release albums, they WON’T make my top 5....and will be lucky to make my top 10.....

I've been digging Cloak's newest as well. ....and Tribulation. So I stumbled upon this ↓ recently. I think they're working on new music, but this video from last year blew me away. If I had to categorize it using the least conglomerated genre terms possible - I would call it "Symphonic Blackcore".

Freshly released stuff from NoEvDia (deathspell omega label). Avantgarde and occult for sure but I really have a love for this kind of music. It just speaks to me on a level I understand well.
