I'm going to address people's concerns. I'm not mad, I understand why people would react this way. It seems people misunderstand both my motives, context, and intentions. I'll start with one point at a time. Firstly, it seems people are ticked off with "Orgasmic Ruler". If you read the lyrics, you'll realize it's about being controlled by lust, and that lust brings ruin in the end. (Eg. lust is bad don't lust) As for "Committing genocide against the unrighteousness of this modern age" that is not referring to people. It is figurative, and refers to sin in general. "Drinking the Blood of the Antichrist" Obviously no one is going to literally do that, it is meant to be figurative as I said about the previous song lyrics, it is figurative of Satan's public defeat. And it's also about ending the antichrist. I often use misleading song titles *on purpose* to see how quick people are to assume things before actually reading the lyrics. It has absolutely nothing to do with Communion or an inversion thereof .
As far as edgy and controversial song titles and lyrics go, I have a few points to make about that one. One, sinners are the ones who need healing (As Jesus once said) when the Pharisees were accusing Him of "being a friend of sinners and drunkards." My lyrics are not meant to merely cater to people's feelings, and to pamper the Body of Believers. They are meant to reach into the utter depths of despair and pull non Christians out of darkness. Why do I use such controversial lyrics? Because when your in pain, sometimes the only thing that gets your attention is a metaphorical brick to your thick skull. I'm sure we've all shut people out and some of you will know what I'm saying. I just find it funny sometimes that when somebody decides to try something different, people flip out. But who are you to say for certain just because a ministry is different from yours that it is suddenly unGodly or not of God? In conclusion to this, how many of you can safely say that the Bible is always family friendly? It's not, in fact most of it isn't, even in the New Testament. It's not that God supports the horrible things mentioned, but mentioning them is necessary to make the point God is trying to make, and it's the same for me in my lyrics. One of my other biggest reasons for choosing the controversial route isn't to appear more "extreme" or "edgy", I could care less about petty things like that. My focus is souls, that's it plain and simple. People can think what they want but I wish to challenge the humility of other believers. Will they automatically assume the worst, thinking they got it all figured out? OR will they take the time to ask me directly "Hey brother, I'm confused about your lyrics and they bother me. I'm sure you meant something else by them but could you please explain it to me so I can be sure about it?" If people would do this more often with their pastors, in their church congregation, among separate denominations in the Body of Christ, you know we Christians would be a lot more effective. Humility should always be one of our top priorities. Will we ask God "Am I remaining humble before you?" will His answer be "Yes" or will it be "Not always" or a flat "No"? People wonder why the Church has been dissected and turned against one another, why brothers and sisters in Christ hate one another even in their own congregation! Yes it's true I use some top notch controversy in my lyrics, and I don't plan to change that. However.. next time instead of blowing up on some message board just ask me alright? I really don't mind and the edginess of my lyrics aren't nearly a reflection of who I really am once you get to know me. I would be more than happy to hear people voice their concerns. But this back-biting, this isn't what Christ wants of us, we should be more focused on giving the benefit of the doubt rather than immediately assuming the worst. And I know that's easy to give into in this day and age though, cause of how many false teachers are out there. But we can't lose who we are in Christ we just can't, if we do that is what will be our downfall. Anyways guys, I do love you all. God bless.
I hope that helped clear things up a little.

Perhaps an administrator ( Thomas Eversole, *cough* *cough*) could move this to a "Nocturnal Servant's Projects" Thread for further discussion of artistic freedom? Done! I'm going to address people's concerns. I'm not mad, I understand why people would react this way. It seems people misunderstand both my motives, context, and intentions. I'll start with one point at a time. Thanks for coming here to clarify bro. Something I said still left in the other thread - I can accept (and really do believe) that the silver lining is - Nocturnal Servant MEANS well. I'm certain he means for drinking the blood of the antichrist to be a point for Christianity and good.... there's enough overall gist between that project to deduce that. Overall, I really do get what you are were going for. Apart from my personal opinions on your lyrical approaches, I'm beyond thrilled that you actually get quality music released. (its a bit of a beef of mine that too many projects in Christian black metal (I'm talking about just the genre black metal) are 1 full length and done, 1 demo and done, 1 release every 10 years, etc. Some days I feel like me, you, Kenneth and Fire are the only ones getting anything done as far as releases... ...but that's a topic for a different thread.) There's a few things I wanted to point out regarding the message. You're welcome to reject my statements entirely and do your own thing, or take my own experience for what its worth. When Christian lyrics upset/concern Christian listeners, there's something "off".I've only seen a Christian message upset Christians when its either too controversial/offensive, or its in some way inaccurate to the teachings in Bible. Inaccurate isn't the best word. The lyrics don't even have to contrast Christianity, only muddy it, for there to be problems like this. Christian music that's only supposed to be for the unsaved is a double standard.I say that because if the lost still "get something out of it" after they're found, then only-for-the-lost cannot be true. For it to be true would be for them to do some form of "disregard" of it after being saved... An artist pushing back to a listener who disagrees with the message, is like a chef pushing back to a patron who disagrees with his spices.Whoever's right or wrong, true or false, the result is the same. Being told a metaphorical "you don't even know what good food tastes like" will only make for another metaphorical dish of sour grapes. Also, an artist does not really get to initially choose his audience, just like a restaurant does not get to initially choose its customers. That choice often happens after something unfortunate happens.... unfortunately.... If you have to explain the message, the message is not working. Here a while back, there was some concern over a Vials of Wrath t-shirt. Much like with your music Nocturnal Servant, there were a handful of people here broadcasting concern and upset about it. DC Mills came here and cleared up what the meaning and intent was, much like you did for your music as well. All well and good for those of us here to witness the explanation, but it took a public relations effort on his part to "clean up" (again, another similarity here) and I can't remark on the silent majority who could very well be sharing the exact same concerns with DC to this day. Could you have conveyed an in-your-face anti-lust message without having "orgasmic" in a song title or calling someone a swine with a mouthful of semen? My apologies my friend, but I think its very possible. It would take a much greater effort of course, but that's just how tact works. Could you have conveyed sinners will die or Christ's victory over sin and evil without a message about a modern day genocide and Christ drinking the anti-Christ's blood? Again, I think this is very possible. There's a fine line between "parable" and "fiction". The bible has so many concepts which are open to multiple interpretations, its absolutely possible to convey a parable and stay in bounds so even the most well versed of Christians won't decry it as being inaccurate. Once found to be inaccurate or muddy to Christian concepts, well... I'll just say that 20 years of listening to Christian metal, I still have yet to reconcile "Christian fiction". Mostly because if I consider something incorrect, I can only wonder what else is incorrect... Bottom line bro, I'm not judging you. I'm far from qualified for that. I do not think at all that you're sinning or even "wrong". ...but its generating confusion though. What you saw in the original thread was one result of that. Like I stated before, I'm glad that your doing what you're doing because this scene could use all the help it could get. I love you man, and I am grateful for your faith.

I do see your point(s) Thomas and for the most part, I agree. I will keep using controversial lyrics, however, seeing that your intentions are certainly positive I will take care to make sure my lyrics are more easily understood. I have this weird habit of hiding meanings within stuff, whether it be lyrics or even my day-today conversations. I have no clue why, it's just always been a weird habit of mine. But being that lyrics are meant for the public to see and go beyond my personal life, I need to make my intentions much more clear both as an artist and as a Christian. Have a strong base meaning that's easily discerned and if I want to spice it up with some hidden meaning somewhere I can still easily achieve that. But I would like to point out again that when I mentioned genocide I wasn't talking about sinners or any person, I was referring to the essence of sin itself. However, genocide was a rather ridiculous word in that context looking back on it now (those lyrics were written well over 6 months ago). If I were to say "committing genocide against the demonic horde" or something that would have made a lot more sense. I'll be very honest I'm still a n00b when it comes to writing these lyrics haha, so it becomes increasingly difficult to balance provocation and controversy with being able to easily discern the lyrical meanings and using the right words and phrases etc. I realize now I simply have to take a lot more time composing my lyrics (which will still be provocative and controversial) in order to make their meanings more easily understood. Of course, releases that have already been scheduled or have already been fully recorded and mastered are out of the question of editing, because it's simply impossible to edit them now. However, any new music that I produce from this point forward, will have lyrics composed with this knowledge and insight in mind that you offered me. I don't always promise family friendly lyrics, but I will do my best to write lyrics that are not easily taken out of context. Also the lyrics for "Drinking the Blood of the Antichrist" was more or less fiction, it's true that it symbolizes Satan's public defeat as well as the fall of the antichrist in it's general meaning. However, it was mostly just used to channel my anger and hatred for the demonic, like an outlet of sorts. Though if I want to make sense I cannot always give into blind rage like that (though I surely want to a lot of times). And the part about "a mouth full of semen you swine" yeah I agree that was uncomfortable to read for most, but that was merely used to push the boundaries a bit (if we don't push boundaries on certain things, no one would ever make any legitimate progress). I don't literally want that to happen, it's used more as a wake-up call if anything, like when you need a good knock on the head before you will pay attention to danger, and it refers to the end result of lust as well. The reason I used the term "swine" is because swine in the Bible usually represented people who were comfortable in their sin, a lamb may fall into the mud (eg sin) but they don't always want to be there. However a pig is different. Pigs enjoy the mud (eg sin, evil) and willingly stay there and return there if they are not already there. So it's a wake-up call to those who willingly commit sin as a habit or lifestyle and enjoy it and indulge in sin regularly. The "semen in the mouth" part was also a controversial (and I will say blatant) reference to lust, specifically the worst kinds of sexual immorality which usually includes unfruitfulness, hence the "mouth full of semen" and with the example of the pig "you swine". But as you can see, it is simply too detailed to understand at face value, and that is why I will take better care to make sure that my meanings are more easily understood, though I'm not aiming to please anyone, I simply wish to be more effective in the Body of Believers. The lyrics will still be provocative and controversial, but it's overall meaning I hope to make it more easily understandable. Though, in the end, I can't always please everybody to begin with. However, I will certainly do my best to make easily interpreted lyrical meanings.
But in conclusion, 90% of my lyrics are not literal. Some parts are literal, but a good majority of my lyrics are symbolic of something and have been from the start with all of my projects. So you are safe in assuming that any song lyrics you come across of mine heavily symbolize something, rather than always having any literal meaning of anything. Some lyrics have literal meanings yes, like how "No Light, No Compassion" literally referred to my uncle that passed away, and the location of which his body was found was near a church. However most of my lyrics do not have a literal meaning or interpretation. (( It is also very important to understand that you will never, ever, see me knowingly promoting any kind of sin in any way form or fashion ever. My lyrics are super controversial and even offensive at times yes, but I will never I repeat I will NEVER promote sin. )) Even though I do expect controversy with my future music in some circles even after this, I've made my peace with that because I didn't choose all of this blindly. However I will say that if even after I do my best to improve upon the lyrical meanings being more obvious, and my lyrics still offend some people, that will just have to do. I'm not too concerned about people's feelings regarding my music, there's plenty of other music out there that doesn't approach subjects in the same manner that my music does. If they don't like or are angry with my message or lyrics, they simply don't have to listen to or buy my music. I didn't start my projects to be accepted by the scene as a whole or even partly be accepted into it (although it's nice when I can be), but rather to take a battering ram to evil in order to expose it by any (non sinful) means necessary. Even if that means using blatant and extreme controversy, or even risking what people think about me as an individual, or if that means people walking out of my life. When it comes to using my music to expose sin, evil, and hypocrisy I will be putting all of that aside. I do things much differently than a lot of people, I just simply cannot fit into any mold. I do what I do (within reason) and that's that. I do thank you however for your insight, it has helped me grow a bit spiritually so again, my thanks and gratitude. Despite all that is mentioned above, I still wish to remain humble and become corrected if need be. God bless you bro, also thanks for appreciating my projects. I certainly try to put a lot of effort into them, and I'm glad there are others out there like you who are always doing your best to improve upon and make the scene grow, as well as help save souls along the way.
Thank you as well for taking the time to respond to my previous reply, I hope you all are having a wonderful afternoon/day/night haha

On a brighter note though, and moving away from the subject of controversy there's a huge amount of material that will be getting released. Both announced and unannounced. Keep in mind the lyrics were written before I seen the concerns on this forum, just don't take them too literally and you should be fine (I hope). This new material includes stuff from What Brings Ruin, Shekinah, and Goatscorge. I also hope to experiment more with Shekinah in the future as well, I just recently got an Op-Amp Big Muff fuzz guitar pedal and I'm really dishing out some sick tones, and it makes the feedback absolutely insane when I combine it with my amplifier's overdrive. I'll also be experimenting with slightly louder vocals, and far less vocal reverb, on some of my projects.

Mysterious Gamer Dude From the song "Necrophobic": "Raped is how I want you to be Raped is how I want you to be"What...??? As far as I can tell, this is a character in the song saying this, not the POV of Nocturnal Servant. I'd still like a little more clarity on the lyrical meanings, tho'.

As far as I can tell, this is a character in the song saying this, not the POV of Nocturnal Servant. Yeah I thought of that too. That's not what I really get from the quotation marks etc in the lyrics -- it seems like "he" is the one saying it, but I mean, at that point I'm pretty much just nitpicking his grammar, haha. So I'm definitely not assuming the worst, but I won't pretend it didn't bother me a bit. I definitely wanted to ask.

We can't tell the context for "Raped is how I want you to be" ...in a Christian song. That's a problem. If it wasn't a Christian song, whatever. That's secular metal. If it wasn't wanting someone raped, spoken in a first person perspective, why yes, that sounds more like a Christian song, among other things. Sorry, I can't put this thought into the right words today, so I'm going to give everyone a puzzle to put together. www.themetalonslaught.com/post/nocturnal-servant-goes-dark+ www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+18%3A14&version=NLT= My point. I think all of us would take notice to a sermon, where the pastor was spiritually sick. If he took a hiatus from preaching to heal himself, that would be a good thing. But if he recorded his sermon when he was sick, and distributed it later when on hiatus, what has really stopped? Nothing. In fact, there's more of it. For everyone else too.

"Interesting" story: My guitar teacher related to me how he was once a teenager, working out in his garage and listening to Nirvana's In Utero album. His mother happened to walk in right as the song "Rape Me" came on.
I had something similar happen. When I was a teenager, maybe around 10th or 11th grade, I bought mewithoutYou's CD It's All Crazy, It's All False, It's All a Dream, It's All Right. At one point I found out my dad had been listening to it. This particular album has a song called "Fig With a Bellyache," which has some pretty strong sexual themes. Sample lyric: "What we're thinking about is your mammary glands and how to sail your birth canal." Yes, it has a meaning in context. My dad never mentioned this to me, so either he wasn't paying attention to the music or he's going to spring this on me some time in the future.

I can relate to some degree. Even as a teenager, when I didn't listen to much secular music and lived with my parents, Real McCoy's "Run Away" was playing on the radio station and my mom even had a pile of "nope" for that.
There's no reason to expect non-Christian music to correlate with Christian values.
...this is VASTLY different in concepts, than what this thread is about though.
(Which is Supposedly "Christian" lyrics which are more vile, sick, obscene and disturbing compared to most secular music, even when compared to quite a bit of secular metal)

Ok so he replied to my message but didn't reply here for some reason Basically julienbakerfan was right, it's basically written from the point of view of evil, not from Nocturnal Servant himself. If Nocturnal Servant wants to say more, he can post here himself. Edit: For the record, I have also had similar experiences to both of you, listening to vulgar music that looking back, I'm certain my family didn't approve of. But what Thomas said also applies in my case -- the music in question, wasn't Christian.

Basically julienbakerfan was right, it's basically written from the point of view of evil, not from Nocturnal Servant himself. Jeff: "So there I was, tearing the hot seasoned flesh off the bone and chewing it. I was overwhelmed with the delicious flavors...." *everyone else in the vegan chat room* - Rose: "What in the..." Steve: "Jeff?" Jeff: "What!? Its still a vegan story. Its just from the point of view of a meat eater." *clears throat* Hey, you know what other stories have the point of view of a meat eater? Stories about eating meat. Likewise, you know what other lyrics have the point of view of evil? Evil lyrics.

...this is VASTLY different in concepts, than what this thread is about though. It was a rabbit trail. I just thought of it because the word "rape" in the lyrics reminded me of Nirvana's "Rape Me," which then reminded me of this story, and so on. Edit: For the record, I have also had similar experiences to both of you, listening to vulgar music that looking back, I'm certain my family didn't approve of. But what Thomas said also applies in my case -- the music in question, wasn't Christian The mewithoutYou song in question actually has a fairly Christian message to it. I think Aaron Weiss wrote it when he was still a Christian. This is another rabbit trail though. Hey, you know what other stories have the point of view of a meat eater? Stories about eating meat. Likewise, you know what other lyrics have the point of view of evil? Evil lyrics. There have been Christian metal artists who have done songs from the point of view of the devil, an unbeliever, etc. It's usually been quite clear what those songs were about, though. And they didn't usually have Supposedly "Christian" lyrics which are more vile, sick, obscene and disturbing compared to most secular music, even when compared to quite a bit of secular metal I don't have a huge lyrics filter. I listen to a good bit of secular metal and secular rap. Most of it doesn't mention rape; you'd have to do a deep dive into Cannibal Corpse-type stuff to get there. Here's another thing that I don't think anyone else caught: "Never opposing a different view or else next it will be you raped and dead in the cold ground "Islamophobic!" "Homophobic!" "Sexist!" "Racist!" "Islamophobic!" "Homophobic!" "Pedophobic!" "Necrophobic!" This seems like it's equating gay people and Muslims with pedophiles and necrophiles. I don't have any problem with believing what the Bible teaches, and I have no problem with calling homosexuality or idolatry sins. But there is a big difference between being a Muslim and being a necrophile. One of my siblings has a Muslim roommate. I've had several gay friends in my lifetime. I'm around lots of very liberal, pro-LGBTQ, pro-abortion, etc. people because I'm in grad school and sortakinda involved in the DIY music scene. These people are not the moral equivalent of pedophiles or necrophiles or rapists. To say so is just plain ignorant and inflammatory. It makes Christians look like mindless fanatics.

I'd like to add some thoughts to the topic of this thread, if its possible for me to do so without stirring drama around. I said this before, and this is unchanged. I think the music Mysterious Gamer Dude does is pretty good. He's got the raw and harsh down right. As far as music goes, I'd have to say What Brings Ruin is what I like the best. (2nd best is Shekinah, and not just because I did the drums for it) :B Despite that "Necrophobic" track being just absurd from a lyrical/Christian standpoint, I've really enjoyed the track and played it several times. I just had to file it under "secular filth" in order for my brain to "accept it". I mean, I like ice cream, but if I took a bite of pizza and it tasted like ice cream, I'd be like "What the..." (something is wrong) Kinda the same thing with categorizing Christian vs non-Christian lyrics with the music. (and I might be the odd man out that I CAN enjoy music that I don't agree with lyrically - I just have to file the lyrics as fiction trash and all but get them completely "out of the way") I feel like Proven Existence and Shekinah aren't subject to the controversy outlined in this thread. I have no qualms these being considered as "Christian". These projects MAKE SENSE. 100% of the problem are the projects Goatscourge and What Brings Ruin. They are a complete contradiction in themes and values. I thought about this - what would be the WORSE possible way to convey "Christian music", even more than what these 2 projects have done? I got it. If ALL the lyrics were straight up satanic rites, hail Satan, evil evil evil, and then the last stanza of the last track said something along the lines of "then that's when I turned to Christ and my life has changed ever since. To God be the glory! Amen" ....and THEN, this is "marketed" as "Christian". Seriously, that's the only way it could be worse IMO. Side comparison and then I'll shut up: I haven't had a drink in over 12 years. Yes, I still go to AA meetings. Speaker meetings are a thing - where instead of everyone at a table taking turns sharing, its 1 person talks for an hour and everyone listens. A lot of speaker meetings, there's some sharing of experience (what happened, what it was like), but the focus is on SOBRIETY. (what its like NOW) I find this to be similar to "good" Christian music. Where there's some of what evil is like, what happened, but the focus is on Christ and living like Him. I've gone to a few meetings where the speaker's 50 minutes of their 1 hour are "war stories". They did this and that when they were drunk, and I can see it in there eyes - they light up, like to them, there's still some glory left, from that insanity.... ...and then the "in closing" is little more than a "well, I'm sober now and my life has changed for the better. To God be the glory! Amen" An old Cherokee story, how there's two wolves inside of everyone. One wolf is compassion and love, the other wolf is hate and pride. Which wolf wins? The one you feed. Sad to say, apart from our own "wolves" in this hypothetical, its also pretty easy to identify when someone else feeds "the wrong wolf". It howls louder than the other one...

I can imagine nothing worse than 50 minutes of "I was drunk" stories. To be honest, though, I face similar problems in my life and in my lyric writing--I emphasize dark/depressing/messed up stuff out of some misguided belief that it makes me more authentic. And it is easier to write sad lyrics than genuinely happy and hopeful ones. mean, I like ice cream, but if I took a bite of pizza and it tasted like ice cream, I'd be like "What the..." (and I might be the odd man out that I CAN enjoy music that I don't agree with lyrically - I just have to file the lyrics as fiction trash and all but get them completely "out of the way") G.L.O.S.S. is my favorite "underground" punk band. Their lyrics are all about trans people rising up and violently taking down straights. Like "CHICKS WITH DICKS KILL FROM THE HEART!" Yeah. Completely 100% the opposite of my worldview.

I can imagine nothing worse than 50 minutes of "I was drunk" stories. Well I could see how that WOULD be awful, but the few of these speaker meetings that I remember like this, the speaker injected a lot of humor and was quite self-deprecating. It wasn't really that bad. Then again, it was about as edifying as stand-up comedy. G.L.O.S.S. is my favorite "underground" punk band. Their lyrics are all about trans people rising up and violently taking down straights. Like "CHICKS WITH DICKS KILL FROM THE HEART!" Yeah. Completely 100% the opposite of my worldview. That almost sounds like something completely tongue in cheek satire. Is it though? Even if the artist intends it to be, I'm wondering if the listener could still intend it something else. I haven't looked into the band, but I'm not aware of trans-folk referring to themselves in a positive light as "chicks with dicks". When I first saw these posts where white people were saying they were tearing down these racist phobic posters around town, and the poster said "its okay to be white".... I immediately thought of how sick and pandering some white liberals are. ....but then I saw enough of them, I realized it was satire. Unfortunately, I've seen posts where people decry racism, as they're simultaneously racist to white men.
