We've all heard of the Polish band Batushka. There's debate over whether they're Christian or not, but ... a careful look at their imagery answers that question pretty quickly, doesn't it? SUPPOSEDLY, some real, actual Orthodox Christian priests in Russia have taken issue with Batushka's appropriation of Orthodox imagery, and have started their own band, Batyushka. This is almost certainly a gimmick. I just can't see actual priests with, presumably, no experience playing metal music, suddenly creating an entire album like this. I almost don't care, though - this music is GOOD. If you don't mind slow to mid-paced stuff, you're in for a real treat here. ..... Edit: As I'm listening to this, I'm getting conflicting thoughts about it. The idea seems so, insanely gimmicky, but the music is so emotional. Even with 7/8 songs being instrumental, the music just bleeds this melancholic, longing emotion. Surely a parody band wouldn't (read: couldn't) write music this deep?...

“we are not some bunch of larping posers”
ROTFL
Good stuff, different than I expected. I honestly was moved to pray during a few of the songs. Per their Bandcamp page, they’ve been around since 2005.

The music is good but it annoys me to no end that so many christian bands try to be the "christian option" to secular bands like Firethrone to Darkthrone, Rotting serpent to Rotting christ and now this.
I think it's ridiculous.

Rotting Serpent’s music sounds like Rotting Christ? It always sounded like a different style of black metal to me.
I like how on this Batyushka’s MA page, there are three similar artists listed, all of which are called Batushka.

I have to agree with you that aping the sound of a successful secular band is troublesome. I appreciate this particular band for the "parody" aspect and the fact that the music is actually not terrible. My issue with other bands is that while trying to be a "Christian" Darkthrone, etc, the art is lost and the music is just bad. Those are clearly just looking to capitalize on the Christian scene and not make art that glorifies the Creator.

Both of their albums have extremely low scores on Metal Archives right now, which surprised me a lot -- sure, there's almost no way this is a "real band". At the height of Batushka's popularity, these Russian priests just release a compilation of songs they wrote 14 years ago and in 2 days, have a whole new album?? But the effort they've put into the music is clear, as far as I'm concerned. I, too, am quite moved by the music. Rotting serpent to Rotting christ Rotting Serpent isn't meant to be a Christian version of Rotting Christ.

Rotting Serpent’s music sounds like Rotting Christ?. No but the name is obviously a reference also if I remember correctly the logo is a copy of their logo. I mean, to each it's own but I don't like cheap parodies

This is hilarious.
I'm almost tempted to put out a project and title it Batushka just for kicks.

We've all heard of the Polish band Batushka. There's debate over whether they're Christian or not, but ... C'mon man Bathuska is very obviously and deeply anti-christian satanic band. Pretty mych as it gets all the way. With every image, word, pose they mock God. How is it possible people dont see it ?

C'mon man Bathuska is very obviously and deeply anti-christian satanic band. Pretty mych as it gets all the way. With every image, word, pose they mock God. How is it possible people dont see it ? How is it possible people don't see that membership to the catholic church is not required to enter heaven? Anyway, Apparently the chants Batushka (not the parody band in this thread) used in (some of) their recordings, rips from this album. When translated, they are saying things like "Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages, Amen." There are repeated prayers asking for the Lord to have mercy. Sorry, but I don't see "divine mercy" as an attribute a evil occultist would seek out, if said "Lord" was not "The Lord"... ...but, I'm not here to debate whether this is Christian or not. I'm only pointing out that its reasonable to think Batushka is NOT satanic or anti-Christian... ...and claiming they are DEFINITELY satanic or anti-Christian is a pretty unfounded fly-by-night thing to say.

Oh man. This thread is threathening me with death by laughing.
If you look very objective to all of this...it is just too dry.
Fake larpers who can't spell the name right... Oh man. I am getting all schizophrenic here.

Will taken a listen tomorrow though. Can't say they failed getting my attention.
Also, they put the free download link on the bandcamp page. Aren't they missing the point of bandcamp there? :'D

So today they're making their discography available on bandcamp for a whopping $0.50! I might be able to scrape together a couple quarters from the change in my car...

Eeech, i mistakenly thought OP is talking about one of those 2 polish bands, and he was talking about this third one, my bad The thing is a brutal meme to me. Those russians (who knows if they really are) have a bit of a british sense of humor in them.

Those russians (who knows if they really are) According to information on Metal Archives, they're not Russian. From what I heard, the Russian word "Песнь" refers to a song that has vocals. And indeed, "Песнь 1" has vocals, but their songs "Песнь 2", "Песнь 3", etc are all instrumentals. They misused the word, indicating that they don't understand the Russian language. Personally though, I will probably continue to refer to them as "the Russian Batushka" just to avoid confusion. Incidentally, they released a new album today!

I should probably actually listen to the music before I purchase it, though I imagine it would be worth the $0.50.

It seems they removed the discount in the five minutes it took for me to listen to a track just now.
