It seems like church and especially sermons have become more political in the last 4-5 years. I've gone to church all my life, and it seems like a lot of preaching these days is about political subjects. There's always been a right-wing undercurrent in most of the churches I've attended, but it seems like its become an obsession recently. I'm almost to the point of explicitly trying to escape it. Is it just me? Am I paranoid?

In the time frame you're talking about, I've only been in one church. And it doesn't seem to have gotten more political. But I would not be surprised IN THE SLIGHTEST based on what other people say. It seems just about every single church in America, except the one I attend, has fallen victim to all these traps. Politicizing the Gospel, replacing "spiritual/religious" discipline with flashing lights and smoke machines, teaching new age filth instead of Biblical doctrine, ... It's bizarre.
I know someone who works in psychology and sociological stuff. According to that person, the majority of serious Christians were apolitical back in the 1950s. They lived their lives, and basically "let the world play its political games". Apparently around the time abortion was legalized, more Christians got into politics, presumably let themselves be swayed by it, and now we have the watered-down political American "GOD, GUNS N BEER" "Christianity" of today.
Being that politics is becoming more polarized by the day, and our social sphere is becoming more... what I can only call "outlandish" by the minute, I figure it's only a matter of time until the scale tips in some direction, and the American churches either get fed up with this lukewarm politics worship and kick it out of the churches, or fully embrace it and give up the pretense of basing it all on life-changing faith.

In the time frame you're talking about, I've only been in one church. Same here... and I wasn't able to attend the Sunday morning service because I work Sundays, but nothing political was ever discussed in the Sunday night Bible study. Politicizing the Gospel, replacing "spiritual/religious" discipline with flashing lights and smoke machines, teaching new age filth instead of Biblical doctrine, ... It's bizarre. Yeah, the church my parents go to.... it felt a bit like a concert in a church building more than "church". Also from talking with my mom (specifically), I have a feeling that there's some "prosperity gospel" elements there at their church. I could be wrong about that. ie: something material and small happens = God really does care I get this vibe from my mom sometimes. I'm all for inspiration, but not when it comes to "stuff". In my opinion, I found $20 on the sidewalk = God is so good = incorrect Life is terrible because of sin, but God still cares = God caring is more valuable/meaningful than anything in life that happens/doesn't happen = correct There's always been a right-wing undercurrent in most of the churches I've attended This makes sense to me, if only that right-wing tends to be synonymous to pro-life. Not to go off topic, but I find it ironic the two "sides" for abortion are "choice" and "life". Never heard anyone pro-life bark about "Women shouldn't be able to choose". To the contrary, they support women being able to choose anything, except when it comes down to KILLING A PERSON. I still really like one thing Dave Chapelle said in his newest special. He talks about abortion. He states that its a woman's body, she has the right to choose for abortion, "her body, her choice" men don't have a say. The audience cheers. Then he says HOWEVER... if a woman CHOOSES to keep a child the FATHER doesn't want, he should have a choice on whether or not to pay. "his wallet, his choice". "If you can kill the motherf*****, I can at least abandon him." The audience wasn't cheering - more like nervous laughter. "If I'm wrong then perhaps we're wrong. Figure that s*** out for yourselves." Good times. LOL
