I'm in the midst of organizing my digital music collection and it's becoming a waking nightmare. My first step was taking all of the music on my computer and organizing it via genre. I made folder for genres (e.g. Metal) and subfolders for subgenres (e.g. Black Metal) and sorted out all the music in this way. Next, I made a spreadsheet with all of the music that was on my phone on it, categorized by album, artist, and genre. This went pretty well. Now, I'm trying to do two things. First, I'm making sure I have all of my CDs on my computer, so I'm having to rip between 20 and 30 CDs that I haven't ripped yet. Second, I'm trying to organize the music on my phone into folders, which is absolutely nightmarish. It is an incredibly slow process. I could alphabetize all of my CDs three times over in the time it takes to fill up one folder. The next step will be to have a system so that whenever I get new music, it goes straight to the computer, the correct folder, and the spreadsheet. Then, I will say to my soul "Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry." (Actually, I will probably try to organize my ~1000 books). Anyone else have this problem? nocturnaliridescence can you help a brother out? Update: Found a faster way to move files around on my phone. Thank God!

I have most of my physical CDs sorted by name. If I have more than one by the same band, I [try to] organize them chronologically.
As for digital music, I just store it in folders by artist, then sub-folders by album. I don't even bother with the genre tags. Edit: To clarify, my computer alphabetizes them with a click of a button -- "Sort by" and then things like "name" (which I use), "file size" etc
Most of the music I like is on YouTube though, so I just listen to stuff there and don't even bother downloading it.
I get the impression you have a lot more music in your collection than I do, and I'm... not sure if a system as simplistic as mine would work in your case?

I sort everything alphabetically be it physical or digital, much easier to find stuff I'm looking for.

My CDs are stacked on the bookshelves in my office. I'm not sure what's even there actually. Lots of new/unopened stuff. The only CD players I have are - my wife's vehicle - this cheap little boombox - my laptop/PC Since I don't use any of those to listen to music, "my CDs" are hardly "my listening music". As for my digital collection (on my SD card on my phone), apart from my own releases I have "collected", if I haven't listened to something in quite some time (not a set time, more "feeling" than anything) - then, I delete it. I'd say I have about 50 albums or less on my phone at any given time. I do not feel compelled, really at all, to keep digital downloads. Almost all of the releases I've listened to, are also on YouTube to listen to. If I delete something and want to listen to it again, I use the YouTube app to listen to it again, rather than put music files back on my phone.

I get the impression you have a lot more music in your collection than I do Probably around 100-120 gigs of music. I'm not sure what's even there actually. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. Personally I prefer CDs to digital music, but my cars haven't had working CD players (currently borrowing my dad's car right now, which does!). I have a lot of stuff I've downloaded because it was free and haven't given a good listen to. On the other hand, downloading it ensures that I will actually listen to it, rather than seeing it on Spotify and then forgetting about it. It also means that I have like 50 C-tier Christian hardcore/punk bands on my phone. Not every band is the next Officer Negative.

Probably around 100-120 gigs of music. Yeah, that's more than me, haha! My whole collection might[?] be around 100 gigs, but keep in mind too, I have a lot of 15+ minute harsh noise recordings.

I recently set up a Subsonic server, so I can now stream my music from my computer collection to my phone from anywhere (provided my computer is on). Goodbye Spotify, hello 2TB of Name-Your-Price downloads from Bandcamp and Grateful Dead live shows.
