I was a little iffy on Kekal for a long time because I'd only listened to "1000 Thoughts of Violence" a little bit (even though I had "Embrace the Dead.") Well, I finally REALLY listened to "Embrace the Dead" some time ago and I'm blown away. I'm convinced that it's one of the great classics of Unblack Metal. "Beyond the Glimpse of Dreams" is fantastic too, but I just cannot stop listening to "Embrace the Dead." They were already experimenting, but keeping things within the boundaries of the genre. It's atmospheric with a great sense of melody. The guitar work is fantastic (including solos) and there's a great variety of male and female vocals. They're just great songwriters and stuff like "The Fearless and the Dedicated" is just incredible.

I jammed Embrace the Dead on cassette when it came out. Great album.
I'm literally only familiar with it and Beyond the Glimpse of Dreams because it seemed those were the only two albums that were black metal.

I have 1K Thoughts of Violence on my computer, but I've listened to it once, if that much. I know a lot of their albums are Name-Your-Price on Bandcamp, which is why I have one of them.

Kekal's song "Behind those Images" (from Beyond the Glimpse of Dreams) was my introduction to Unblack, way back cir 2000. Prior to that time, although I'd known about Mortification, Tourniquet, and some other Christian Metal bands, I wasn't aware that there were any "Unblack" Metal bands, playing in a Blackmetal style.
The song made a big impression on me, and I purchased the CD at Cornerstone 2000, at some random kiosk/tent which had a bunch of CD's for sale. (I also got Crimson Moonlight's .....first?.... album there).
While I've heard Embrace the Dead, it was so long ago that I can't remember it at all. Wait... I remember there being falsetto on the record? Is that possible? Haha...
I also remember not liking it nearly as much as Beyond...
I haven't heard any of their later work, although I think I have a copy of one of them somewhere. Should listen to it sometime to see if it's any good. The main reason I haven't is because they downplayed the Christian aspect of their band, which made it seem less interesting to me.
Seems weird, Kekal as not a Christian band? Why do bands do that? At least create a new project, amirite?
I suppose it's because labels don't want to invest in a totally new band who's name no one recognizes. Easier to use an existing name, and just say they've changed focus, although it really alienates part of the foundational fan-base, I would think.
