Since CW and I are blowing up the chat section, I figured it'd be good to just start a thread dedicated to one of my absolute favorite bands, Virgin Black. For those unfamiliar, they play gothic/doom/classical music of very high quality caliber. They're a Christian band too, though some of their lyrics have put off some of the more conservative Christians. (Although if you read interviews, they clear up some of the misconceptions pretty quickly.) Each album of theirs is quite different than the last.
Sombre Romantic - gothic metal with lots of industrial and black metal elements. It's rough and raw, but absolutely amazing.
Elegant... And Dying - their most "gothic" album, primarily clean vocals. It's extremely underrated IMO.
Requiem - Mezzo Forte - my personal favorite of theirs and one of my favorite albums ever. It is beautiful and tragic. Tracks 4, 5, and 5 are just breathtaking. This is part 2 of a trilogy (with fans still waiting for part 1...). This is also more gothic though recorded with the Adelaide Symphony - which sounds cliche and lame, but wait til you hear it. It's pretty epic.
Requiem - Fortissimo - this one is aggressive doom/death but also with the symphony. It's DARK and heavy.
Any other fans here besides Crimson and I?

I love these guys. I keep hoping that part 3 of this requiem trilogy FINALLY gets done but I am not holding my breath at this point. Another band, though not as heavy, THAT started a trilogy is Amassafer but they ONLY got the first one done.

I'm not familiar with Amassafer though I've heard the name. What style of music are they?

Cool, thanks! I was cranking Requiem - Fortissimo yesterday. It had been a while since I last listened to it all the way through. I'm pretty certain Virgin Black can do no wrong (other than not releasing Pianissimo, that is...).

I have Sombre Romantic, it's very good. I used to have Elegant and Dying, but not anymore. I used to (a million years ago) have the Australian Metal Comp. that included their very early stuff. They were by far my favorite band on that comp, and being the dork that I am I decided to use their band name as a screen name at a rather large chat site (I don't know why I did that, I was stupid). I find it funny to think that a lot of peoples very first indirect exposure to a band that would eventually get pretty big was through me stealing their band name.

Yeah the stuff on the Australian Metal Comp is very good. I also really like Requiem - Fortissimo.

Nice to see some VB love here! My favorite is Sombre Romatinc. It was my first album by them and the atmosphere was incredible.
I hope they release the new album, at least they are active considering they post from time to time on Facebook (not news, more like "hey, we're still alive")

Yes, I am still eagerly awaiting Pianissimo! I don't think it's them on Facebook though. It's a friend of the band, according to a post made some time ago. Still, the admin seems to be in somewhat regular communication with the band.

Requiem - Mezzo Forte was the album I played the most during the times of my deep distress a year-ish ago ("My God be upheld in our distress ... my cries fill the air...") (which, to a lesser degree, continues). This has to be one of the most beautifully written albums ever. I still listen to it often (it looks like I've listened to the album about 80 times, according to my iTunes).
Personally, I was and am not spurred on in my faith by this album (of course I am not contending that encouragement should have been or should be the intention of the band; nor do I assert a value to the effect of my listening); however, I wish I did/do benefit spiritually from this album. I simply suffered while this album played. In some ways, I imagined myself being pulled down by this record, but I cannot discern that casuality with any confidence. For this reason, I do hesitate to suggest the album to others. I am currently deciding how I should act here. Why should I presume that others would have a similar experience as mine? And yet, is it worth the risk? These things occupy my mind as I feel "I've been struck and I am suffering."

I'm not familiar with Amassafer though I've heard the name. What style of music are they? Amassefer is GREAT music with biblical lyric content of old testament. Band from Israel, just awesome music and lyrics. It was hard for me to get the CD but I got it in a website in Germany.
About Virgin Black, I proudly have 4 albums just grotesque music and art.

I was thinking of you all when I was listening to "Lacrimosa (Gather Me)" off of Requiem - Fortissimo and looking out the airplane window at the sunset sky. (The world is full of beauty and sorrow.)

I showed my Mom a few songs off of Requiem - Mezzo Forte and she said, "It sounds like a doom and gloom death march..." -- surprisingly solid description! As you may surmise, my mother does not listen to metal ha.

My mom listened to Black Sabbath growing up. Haha! What's funny is that my dad is the family musician and that's where me and my brother get our ability from, but he can't stomach anything harder than contemporary. Interesting that I got my mom's taste in music and my dad's musicianship. I'm here for a reason folks!

^I owned that album for a brief bit. I'm not a big old-school/brutal death metal fan to start with (I like the doomier and more progressive stuff typically) but even still I was pretty disappointed by it. I found it to be quite boring and the vocal lines seemed almost identical from song to song. Also the production was really holding it back IMO. It did have some cool stuff on it and if it were ever remixed/remastered, I might be interested in it.

and I think the production is spot on. The vocals have great texture and sound.

Hmm, I could just be remembering wrong. As I recall, I thought the vocals were too loud and the guitars thin and tinny sounding. It's been a little while though so I could be mixing it up with something else.

No, you're right Kerrick, the guitars are tinny sounding. ...but this is some well performed death metal! I like for my extreme metal to have production personality, especially if it involves sounding old... and this fits the bill!

Mezzo Forte is coming up on ten years old, and still nothing can top it.

Great band. I like the more classical stuff over the death metal influenced songs and I think I accidentially bought the wrong album because I confused the "mezzo forte" and the other one Googling or using a dictionary would have helped, hah!
