Yeah, that's one of my problems with the increased production too. It's not too bad, but the demo drums were definitely better. I wish they would do the whole album in that style.
The clean vocals in this track are great.

Sorry. I didn't even make it to the clean vocals.

I definitely prefer the demo. The "improved" production in the YT videos just changes it somehow, to me.
Not to say that raw production is automatically good or that clean production is automatically bad, but to me the rawer sound definitely works better for what Départe are going for.

I didn't even know that you've been listening to them, NI. I'm glad you like the band.

A couple more songs were released, including the re-recorded version of II from the demo (now titled "Ruin"). Hearing it just makes me angrier about the higher production. Listen to this part, which was, on the demo, one of the most powerful parts of any black metal song I've ever heard (though you also need to hear the buildup for it to have its full effect): Now listen to it on the demo (track II, timestamp 3:26): departenoise.bandcamp.com/album/demo-mmxivI think it's the drums that "ruin" it (haha see what I did there?) on the album version. As Thomas pointed out, the triggers are really bad. The vocals also sound a little weaker.

Fans of "normal" music will probably prefer the album version, because the production is thicker and the drums are louder, which brings it closer to familiar/normal "metal" territory, whereas the demo packs a more subtle kind of punch. The album version doesn't give the different instruments any "breathing room", whereas in the demo version, that breathing room is essential for the effect they were going for.
Edit: It may just be the synesthesia I've often wondered if I had, but I really just don't like the red backgrounds for these videos - I don't think "red" is a color that goes well with these songs, even the album versions.

I think the red might be a Season of Mist thing...

I just got a very cool email from the band. They are donating their appearance fee and 100% of merch from Metal Fusion 2017 to White Ribbon to fight domestic abuse. This probably requires a little more investigation, but at first glance, I am very impressed.

Love to hear things like that. The money I make with Orationem either goes to further Orationem, or I put it back into the Christian black metal scene. (Whether it's supporting bands, or donations to radio stations, etc.)

I got that email too.
I know folks here seemed to be pretty disappointed with the production on this album, but it's a very good album nonetheless and I definitely recommend giving it a chance! The drums do seem a bit cold/robotic and I think it would have been better were they more organic sounding, but that's more of a personal taste.

My triggers gripe aside... It would even be WORLDS better if the drums weren't so clicky in the mix. Muffling those kicks alone would go a super long way with me.

They posted an interview on their facebook recently: metalvoid.com/2016/11/12/departe-interview-and-album-review/Folks on this forum might be interested in this: On the lyrics, I really enjoy the way you’ve managed to use a very bleak poetic style but still retain that sense of hope. Reading the lyrics, there seems to be a Christian undertone. Is this accurate, and is this where some of the hopefulness is derived from?
That is accurate, most of my lyrics are informed pretty strongly by my personal faith. None of the other guys in Départe share my beliefs but I think we’re all on the same page as far as what we’re trying to do.

I'm currently listening to the old Departe demo for the first time in a while. I almost forgot how amazing this is...

From Facebook: More info on White Ribbon here. They work to stop domestic abuse. I don't really care for the fact that they often seem to single out abuse against one gender, but still, domestic abuse is a serious issue, so this certainly seems like a worthy cause. Départe's demo can be downloaded here.
