The following tracks were my first experimentation with MIDI. My mom had an old CD of this music, which I thought was extremely charming.
I want to share it with you all.
This was made on a Windows 98 machine using a freeware MIDI sequencer called Massiva. This program had a HUGE learning curve and I remember dubbing the MIDI through SoundRecorder (yes, just like a tape) I remembered being extremely frustrated when a "midi pop" would ruin "a take" and I had to start over to try to get the song to sound right.
Definitely a more complicated exporting process than my current software.
This project came about because I had some online friends who were making a game using Dark Basic. The name of the game was called Kayef. I got all my music done, but the game was never finished. You'll notice each track sounds like it could just loop continuously...
Maunstraut was actually the name of the world in this game, which I of course eventually staked claim to.
While Hguols focused more on having distortion and being "MIDI black metal", this is more "symphonic with drums". (with an echo effect to the stings, they actually sounds very convincing!)
The sound quality isn't great by today's MIDI standards, but it still does have a charming "un-production" quality to it. There are more tracks from this CD, but those tracks can be heard "re-recorded" in current Hguols releases. The tracks below are, in my opinion, are up to Hguols quality, but were just forgotten how to play or forgotten about entirely.
Here's the songs and MP3s.
"The Confrontation" - a pretty short track, meant to be "boss music" in the game. I think its decently aggressive and has some nice double-bass work.
"Dying for Nothingness" - The "vocals" sound pretty fake and there's no drums, but its actually a pretty emotionally sad sounding track.
"Requiem of the Damned" - If the name sounds familiar, a "MIDI black metal" version of this track is on the Hguols "Celestial Powers Intervened To True Supremacy" release - replayed from memory of years ago of course. This version of the song came first. No drums. VERY mellow. Slow. Somber. and EPIC.
"The Epitome of Decay - another short track, loaded to the gills with blasting. Meant to be the "final boss" music in the Kayef game. Its simple, but pretty intense.
I wish I could include a drum-roll for this final track. This song alone sparked the creation of Hguols 8 years later. I remember taking a solid week putting it together, trying to make it perfect... and it shows. I would have LOVED to have included this in the debut Hguols but... the track was spontaneously created. In my substance abuse, I lost the original MIDI file which contained the exact notes. I'm sure I could recreate it, but I enjoy the fact that this is one of a kind.
"Death of the Soulless" - Drums a plenty. Lots of variety and a decently long track. I'm sure it would be cliche to say this is one of the better songs I've ever made - but I think it's definitely up there.
Enjoy guys!
