I was around middle school age and it was either a weekend or summer time because I hadn't been to school that day. If I had to guess I'd say it was a Saturday.
For those of you who don't know, I was raised in a pretty strict Christian household. Not crazy strict but there was no secular music allowed in the house. I was not allowed to watch R rated movies, etc. That sort of thing.
Anyway, it was a Saturday and lo and behold it was also time to get a haircut at a salon in the mall. I was at least old enough to be "left alone" while my parents were probably shopping in a nearby store. I was sitting in the waiting area letting my mind wander while I waited to have my hair trimmed when I heard a country song on the radio. I vehemently despised country music (still do to some extent except for classic country) but I heard a country song on the radio that caught my attention. Most country songs I had heard were sad songs about women cheating and tears in beers; so, it was much to my surprise when I heard an uplifting country song on the radio. It was truly refreshing.
After we got home later, I had all but forgotten the song that I had heard. At some point I was in the kitchen with my parents and sister--perhaps it was dinner--and the song popped into my head. Of course I had to start singing it--this, my newfound country song. I sang the words, "There might be a little dust on the Bible, but don't let it fool you about what's inside!" You see, it was among the clamor and the hustle and bustle of a blossoming town's mall salon that I overheard the song over the subpar speaker system. To my naive mind, it sure sounded like David Lee Murphy (WHO'S THAT?) was saying "Bible," and it's not like I could make out the verses. It was a perfect storm for a misunderstanding.
My mom was playfully shocked when she heard me singing and said, "Where in the world did you hear that song!?" Her displeasure was confusing to me because I thought it was a good wholesome song about how we don't always read our Bibles like we should but it doesn't change the truth inside. LOL? Needless to say, my mother corrected me on the lyric and I was instantly let down and vexed! Darn those country songs!
That's right, DARN THOSE COUNTRY SONGS!
