Obviously there has been an assload of talk due to the new film coming out, with it currently rising to the ranks to become the highest grossing film in US history.
Who saw it? What did you think?
I'll start by saying: I had very low expectations for it. Two reasons being, I hate JJ Abrams, and Disney ruins everything they touch. However, the movie was a lot better than I expected, easily beating out Episode I and Episode II. It certainly had weak spots, such as some of the casting (Finn and Po, for example, in my opinion. They were too goofy, seemed like they belonged in space balls and not star wars) or the dialogue, which I thought to be poor and far and few. Not too much character development took place as far as dialogue went. But, the biggest letdown was that they felt the need to stray away from the stories that have already had a good foundation laid in the books written by various authors. Why create a new son for Han and Leia, and give him the name of the child that was already given to Luke and Mara Jades kid in the books? Why eliminate the other two Solo kids (then again, this can't be confirmed for sure yet). I guess the fact that it went from Jacen and Jaina, two twins of the Solos that trained underneath Luke in the new Jedi Academy, with Jacen falling to the dark side and becoming Darth Caedus, and then another child, Anakin Solo, who died leading a resistance, to making a single child obsessed with his grandfathers work seemed like a goddamn cheap shot to all those who wrote before.
Also, please DO NOT keep this thread strictly to the movies! Discuss books and video games and shit. I just started listening to Audiobooks last Wednesday, deciding it was a good way to pass time while at work instead of listening to the same albums over through and through. So far, in a week, I've made it through all three Darth Bane novels, and The Old Republic: Revan novel. The Darth Bane ones are absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended. Starting the Old Republic: Deceived tomorrow.

My favorite part was where the man with the big yellow hat does the Heimlich maneuver to that guy who swallowed the puzzle piece.

I saw Episode VII and quite enjoyed it. I'm certainly not a hardcore Star Wars fan but I enjoy the movies. Haven't really looked into the books much.
I agree that Fin and Poe were a bit goofy, but the latter was still my favorite character in the whole movie and I don't even know why.

At first, I wasn't too keen on Kylo/Ben until I sat and digested what his character was supposed to be, and then I started to realize how well the part was played.

One of my theories was that Kylo and Rey were Disney's reimagining of Jacen and Jaina just with new names. At this point I think any of the theories are possible (Lukes kid, Solo kid, or Obi Wan's Grandaughter)
I think all are feasible, the fact the Lukes saber "chose" her to me suggests a bloodline connection which would be either luke or leia, but it could have simply been the force choosing her to "balance" things. At one point I also thought Leia's hugging Rey was a motherly hug as maybe she realized Rey was her long lost daughter while Rey has yet to make the connection.

I thought it was decent. After all the rave reviews, I had set my expectations a bit too high I think. Like Archduke, I don't care much at all for JJ nor Disney but nonetheless I expected more... I think my biggest complaint was the complete lack of originality in the plot: it was just about identical to the old ones. I understand wanting to reignite the nostalgia and all that... but really? Another Death Star thing? Whatever... The characters were extremely thin and the plot moved too quickly to develop anyone much at all. It was fun in a shut-your-brain-off-and-sit-back-and-enjoy-the-show sorta way. I enjoyed it but I'm not going to rush out to see the next one.

That's the thing though...why reimagine them? All of the books published under lucasarts were considered canon material. But as soon as disney picked it up, they decided to discredit them all. Granted it's obviously not the first time this has been done with a franchise. It's just upsetting.

Well, with a different director on board for the next one, I think I'll have higher hopes for it. I'll always be a star wars "fangirl", but I don't hold to that because of the movies. I hold to that because of the EU.

European Union? I haven't ventured into the Extended Universe much but as a kid I loved the original trilogy of movies. I had some toys which I really enjoyed too. (Bossk was my favorite.) Do we know who the new director will be? That's surprising they're not bringing JJ back since he was so successful (in raking in the $$$) with this one and he's got such a big fanbase. I wonder why that decision was made (and by who) though I'm not going to lose any sleep over it haha.

I can't think of the guy's name off the top of my head, JJ said something about it being too time consuming, and he didn't want to direct another. They're going to have a different director for each one. The new guy said in an interview that the next one is going to be a lot darker.

Currently have made it past all the Darth bane novels, all of the old republic ones (revan, deceived, fatal alliance and annihilation), vector prime (gave up on the series because the audiobooks were abridged and I need full goddamn detail), Darth plagueis, and am currently almost finished with the novel Kenobi.
This has certainly brought an extensive depth to the world for me. So much rich history and lore. Anyone else delved in any of these? I'll probably move to Dawn of the Jedi: into the void after I'm finished with the Kenobi one.

I thought the film was fun and entertaining, even though there are many similaritys to the original film that made it feel half like a safe formula cash in.There wasnt a great deal in new fantastic landscapes, ships, creatures and cool hardware etc, but what was there felt like star wars, even though i was expected much more. The pace felt a bit rushed in places where it could of slowed down and taken some time to build atmosphere some more but that sadly seems to be a modern trend to speed everything up with little breathing space these days. I read The Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy back when they came out. For the most part I cant remember them as it was a while back.(1998-99 i think). The novel Tales of the Bounty Hunters (1996) an anthology of short stories on each of the 6 Bounty Hunters from Empire i really enjoyed, especially the Fett story on his escape from the sarlac pit and Dengar's story. I'v been reading a few series of the Dark Horse graphic novels. Dark Times volume 1-5 is a totally brillant story with excellent artwork i Highly recommend. A few of the Boba Fett books are brillant...Death lies and Treachery, Blood Ties / Boba Fett is Dead(fully painted) and Twin engines of destruction. The Legacy series set in the far future about the skywalker's and solo's great great grandchildren. Tales of The Jedi series and Dark Empire. Also waiting on my shelf to be read is the highly recommened omnibus of Quinlan Vos; Jedi in Darkness. I was reading the Dawn of the Jedi series (3 volumes) sadly was cancelled and wrapped up prematurely when Disney brought Star Wars. Dark Horse had the license to do the comics and was due to expire and ended up being renewed to the Disney owned Marvel comics at the end of 2014. Dark Horse made Star Wars comics for 25 years, theres a lot of material there for sure. I enjoy the tales of the obscure side characters, comics are perfect for exploring these. Timothy Zahn, the author of ten Star Wars Expanded Universe novels had this to say about the EU www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2014/04/timothy-zahns-thoughts-on-new-star-wars.htmlOfficial Press Release Regarding the New Star Wars Expanded Universe www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2014/04/official-press-release-regarding-new.htmlAlso it's interesting how much Star Wars took from french comics ...

How is that Kenobi novel? I read an interview with the author just before it came out and it sounded really intriguing. Essentially it's a Star Wars western type novel. It's mostly about the farmers on tattooine, and then part is written from the perspective of the Tuskan Raiders. I didn't particularly like it at first, but it pulled me in half way through the story.

I've gotten through more than I'd like to admit at this point. Hah. But anyone interested in a good series, Fate of the Jedi was pretty good, and very dark. It follows the events of the Legacy of the Force series, which is also great, but it fills you in enough on the events that you don't need to read the prior ones.
I'm on Thrawn trilogy now. And while Timothy Zahn is a good writer, and I highly respect him for opening up the EU and laying the ground work out, I'm finding them pretty boring. It's basically just the leftovers of the empire fleet constantly chasing Luke and the Solos.

Apparently it's very good. It's supposed to be very dark, a-la Revenge of the Sith. Darth Vader is supposedly very badass. I'm looking forward to seeing it probably in a couple weeks.
