I'm not entirely sure what this thread is. I guess it's a rant, but it's also trying to start a discussion. I want to know what you guys think about this. Have any of you ever had someone describe your tastes as "screamo", as if that's an overarching term for any kind of music with harsh vocals? I have, and it bugs me. Screamo is a very specific genre of emo music that's derived from hardcore punk, and a simple Wikipedia search would tell you that. But people use it incorrectly all the time, and, in my eyes (ears?), it has a really negative connotation attached to it, as if the vocal style is something so horrendous that everyone ought to disregard the music behind it and slap a label on there that is not only false, but also only considers the vocals. It just bugs me. If I'm asked what my music tastes are, I used to just tell people that I listen to metal. Depending on how old they are, they either think of the old metal bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden (those would be the older people), or modern poppy metalcore (those would be the younger people). In reality, neither is true (I do like a little old-school metal from time to time though), but few enough people know what black metal even is for that to be a useful term for me to use, and the ones who do will know that it's mostly Satanic, and when I try to explain to them that I'm not a Satanist and that I listen to Christian black metal, it only becomes more confusing. So if I tell someone under 30 years old that I listen to metal, I guess that means I listen to screamo. It's gotten to the point where I just try to dodge the question whenever I'm asked about my music tastes and just say that I listen to "weird stuff that you've never heard of and no one cares about" and leave it at that. It sounds kinda rude, but it's so much easier than trying desperately to explain without them getting the wrong idea. But hey, why should I care? I bet they listen to that singo crud.

I love screamo, but yeah it's annoying when I have to correct people with their usage of the word. But to me it's just as bad when someone says that they only listen to slayer, slipknot, Metallica, Pantera, and Lamb of God. People need to expand their horizons. Now I fall into this category because my knowledge of punk (straight punk, because I know my hardcore punk) is severely lacking.

Now it gets real confusing when black metal molds with screamo. You get some like this band,██████ (see link below). They are equal parts black metal and screamo, unfortunately they stuck with screamo vox instead of the textured black metal growls. pestproductions.bandcamp.com/album/demo

You're not alone in your frustration. I personally refuse to use the term because extreme music is punny enough, I've got to draw the line somewhere. (same line drawn for "unblack") I think I'd rather someone identify extreme metal with "screamo", than these frickin' idiots I keep running into that say "Oh yeah, I listen to black/death metal. You know.... Pantera. Black Sabbath. Smashing Pumpkins. Etc."

When people say "screamo", I think of music like this. I'm not sure how accurate that is, though.

I think "Black Strip" was something that MA dubbed them, not the band themselves.

"Have you listened to the new 6 squares man? It's wicked sick."
See, that just sounds right to say.

Personally I am pretty frustrated with all the new sub-genre term that keep coming because I really cant keep up with them That said, it is pretty weird to call just about evertything with screamed vocals "screamo". Never heard that one before and I am kind of glad, hah.

Falling back in love with screamo at the moment. This genre means a lot to me but sometimes gets on my nerves with how un-metal it is.
Let's start things off with this band. This is what happens when you cross emo with grindcore. It's pretty awesome
And now this is another older band
And now this band at sometimes almost seems to be what DSBM would sound like when stripped of everything metal about it
And to finish things off this is the band that got me into this type of screamo

Dude, Ampere sounds amazing! I'm pretty sure I'll buy it on Bandcamp soon. That is spectacular.

It's funny that I like this so much considering that I don't like most emo/screamo and I don't like most grindcore. Well, you like hardcore, and this sounds more like crazy hardcore to me than "screamo-grind". ...but then again, I don't really see a difference between screamo and hardcore, except for breakdowns?...

...but then again, I don't really see a difference between screamo and hardcore, except for breakdowns?... Hardcore, from what I understand, is basically metalcore with a bit of punk influence This (Christian) would be hardcore, while this (secular?) would be an extreme example of screamo.

I grew up listening to hardcore before getting into metal. I'm kinda surprised you guys haven't been exposed to much hardcore.....
Option is definitely hardcore. You need to go to the 90s to hear hardcore at it's best. One of the biggest christian hardcore bands in the 90s was NIV (No Innocent Victim).
A more current band (my knowledge of hardcore is a few years outdated) than plays hardcore is Dynasty
Hardcore originally came from Punk and evolved into harder and harder riffs and breakdowns. The original hardcore punk was Black Flag
One christian band that does a good job recreating the 80s hardcore punk sound is Praiser from Germany, these are great guys.
Metalcore came into existence when hardcore kids thought metal was cool and wanted to play it but ended up playing hardcore still. This would ZAO. This song actually sounds like Carcass, but still has hardcore sensibilities.

I just went with what Vociferator said about Ampere. I really don't know how accurate of a label screamo/grindcore is. I agree that it has a very hardcore vibe to it, and that's probably why I like it so much.
I don't think hardcore has to have breakdowns, but a lot of the more modern styles of it have breakdowns. Screamo is different because the vocals are more screaming rather than the yelling that old-school hardcore bands use. I think there's some kind of instrumental difference too.
For reference, here's an example of the kind of hardcore I like:

Most of my guitar writing is actually influenced by screamo, I just turn it into black metal with blastbeats and other metal drum beats and black metal vocals.

Apart from production and riff structure, I still don't see a difference in genre between those two bands.
Hadn't really listened to any of this stuff before, but it seems like screamo is just hardcore to me.
Also, I wouldn't consider hardcore to be metalcore with punk. (It's a bit of a paradox to define a genre by its subgenre anyway... kinda like saying thrash is black metal without tremolo. LOL)
Hardcore (which is like extreme punk to me) has a distinct flavor of guitars, vocals and drums. That flavor matches screamo exactly. I'd like to think screamo was an extreme emo, but the music isn't really any more emotional.
...of course, this wouldn't be the first I disagreed with an entire genre's existence. (Unblack still takes the cake for being worst genre concept of all time)

When people say "screamo", I think of music like this. I'm not sure how accurate that is, though. somehow I forgot to respond to this. This is more emoviolence/mathgrind than screamo. but after the 1:30 part until 2:45 is actually screamo, yeah I love that stuff.

The original descriptor for screamo was "emotional hardcore" so yeah it is typically very hardcore sounding. What i notice though is that hardcore still has a lot of riffs and breakdowns whereas screamo has more strumming. drums carry the same I think (depending on the band). Vocals are typically more whiny screams than toughguy yells.
