Haha yeah anyone who likes drama and quirky songs in plays written in the late 1800s will appreciate my lame reference on the title of this thread.
Well you know you are being the model of modern American Christian when you go to chick-fil-a and realize you can sing along perfectly to the muzak.
While here I've heard Sea of Faces, One Thing Remains, and He Reigns. I should come here more often haha. I'm clearly the target audience.

Now jamming out to Jesus Messiah by Chris Tomlin. It's been like six years since I've heard this song. Hahahahaha!

I think this is similar to that "hashtagchristianmetalprobs/justchristianmetalthings" thread where you talk about things that you experience because you are a part of some demographic.
As for the reference to some 19th-century play, I have no idea what all that is about.

I guess I need to eat at Chick-fil-A to get the reference?

Unless I'm too dense and missed the whole point of the thread, I'm feeling that there's a chunk of this regarding nostalgia in music. Just thought of this song today I listened to as a kid, before my metal years.
I still think its pretty awesome.

I guess I'm just talking about my generation (insert the The Who song here). It was fun being there and realizing they were playing songs I grew up hearing. Especially living in California, I feel like my personal culture and experiences greatly contrast those of most people in Fresno. I grew up in white suburbia in the middle of the Bible Belt. Everyone I knew had a similar living situation and it was easy to get along with folks. But now I find people who smoke pot, smoke, drink to get drunk, come from broken families, never grew up listening to switchfoot and relient k, etc etc. It's harder for me to understand people and really relate with them. It's almost a daily struggle living in Fresno. So it was nice to spend some time in capitalistic illusion giving me the impression that there was something I can relate with.

Okay I am obviously going through a bout of culture shock right now.... I'm sorry if I am being insensitive

I don't think you're being insensitive. The environment we're in while we grow up does shape us as adults.
People drink, smoke pot, come from broken homes EVERYWHERE. I'd bet my next pay check these people have always been around you, and for whatever reason, you're now just becoming aware of them as an adult. (probably as you meet more people)
Myself, I don't find people hard to understand or relate to, even if they're completely different than me. The opinions and experiences someone has means nothing next to their personality.
I have a very chameleon-like personality. I can blend in anywhere by mirroring. By default, compared to other kids, growing up I was one of the more "privileged" ones. (aka rich kid) ...but that didn't mean I couldn't "mix" with someone with a different income, music preference, religious belief, race, opinions, experience...
...compared to myself.

I remember going into a Chinese restaurant and hearing Amy Grant's "Baby Baby" being sung in Chinese as part of the muzak.

Good to see you back doc!!!
I actually like Asian muzak and contemporary. It's well orchestrated and pretty talented stuff. My wife can't take it though because she doesn't know what they're saying...

My wife can't take it though because she doesn't know what they're saying... I've probably talked about this elsewhere on the forum, but I've never really understood why some people need to be able to understand the lyrics to enjoy the music. I don't really care what language the lyrics are in as long as the music is good. The only exception to that is maybe hardcore punk, where I do like understanding the lyrics, but even then I think I could enjoy it if I didn't know what they were saying.

I've come to the realization that people who's ability to like music depends on being able to comprehend the singer....
...don't actually give a crap about the music itself. These same people just kind of shrug when hearing instrumental music. ...because "music" to them is really someone singing in English. You could bury the recording of a Fisher Price squeak toy in their favorite singalong jam and they probably wouldn't notice.
I've come to accept this with my wife. She tries with my music. Don't quiz her on it though.

Vocals are super important to me because I am a vocalist, but I will also not listen to an album if the snare is horrible and everything else perfect just for an example. I love post-rock, math-rock, atmospheric metal, ambient, trance, and chillstep and other genres without much vocal presence.
I've started trying to pick up on the story music tells itself, it proves to be a difficult thing at times, but I just love delving into an atmosphere

...you are being the model of modern American Christian when you go to chick-fil-a and... I am so proud: A couple weekends ago on our way to Tahoe for a family get-together, my parents, wife, and I went to Chick-Fil-A and it was good. I had never been before but now I feel like I'm a real American Christian.
