Godspeed You! Black Emperor is one of my favorite bands. They don't fit neatly in a genre. Wikipedia notes them as an experimental music collective and their record label doesn't genrefy them any further. For the purposes of providing actionable information, I would position them most closely to postrock (though as I listen to them now, I hear only very non-postrock drones). Anyways! I enjoy listening to Godspeed You! Black Emperor because they create music that potentiates wonder and supports reflection, whether that yield a state of cerebral/emotional stillness (calmness - numbness), dynamic acuity, or something other. Their compositions have captivating dynamics, interesting field recordings, uncommon structures, and thought-provoking ideas. Their music colors the complexity of life that I often mute into monotony's gray or exclude from the fixed geometry of times, dates, places, and expectations I abide. The purpose in their lengthy pieces allows a walk to become a journey without coercing it so. Their creativity subtly deconstructs the barrier between thought and emotion. The aesthetic in their albums is defiant but not unkind and its beauty is unconventional. They create/play with conviction, and I have not heard any other band that sounds like them. If you'd like to check them out, I'd recommend the following few pieces: Storm: Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven / Gathering Storm / Blaise Bailey Finnegan III'Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress' (this one is the most rock/metal-like (i.e., with the most prominent/consistent electric guitars and drones))

I wish I could write this well! lol I'm currently listening to East Hastings and I'm liking the sound. I'll have to check out more of this.

Thanks, bro. I had to think a lot to try to understand what I enjoyed about their music. East Hastings is actually the GY!BE song I've listened to the most.

This song is gorgeous. barabbas which albums of theirs do you enjoy? I'm seeing them this month. Not to set my expectations too high, but I'm planning on it to be a highlight of my life.

Glad you're keeping your expectations in check.
I think my favorite (and first, too, I think) is "Lift your Skinny Fists . . ."

Right on. I really enjoy that album too; in fact, I may well listen to it today.
On that album, Storm, Sleep, and Antennas to Heaven are wonderful (with Storm being my most listened to). The monologue in Static I don't love, but c'est la vie and whatnot.

pretty sure this is the only cover of this band ever. theyre 20min complex songs dont really lend itself to covers. this person, called Gihm, did it with one acoustic guitar. he was a beloved person who uploaded a few handfuls of beautiful covers. he never showed his full face, as i recall. one day without announcement or anything (i mean, he never sang/spoke), he deleted everything and disappeared. ... that was years ago. eh, here's another
