Friends... a few years ago I had toyed around with the idea of doing a book on Christianity in black metal. I did several interviews and some research. For whatever reason, the time didn't feel right to do it and ironically I lost most of the text in a computer crash.
But the inspiration has been creeping up on me again and I think it's something I'd like to tackle.
But I'm looking to you for thoughts (and prayers), suggestions and blunt honesty. I think that a book on this needs to be out there.
What I would like to know is .... what would you like to see, what bands would you like to see involved or any other suggestions you might have.?
Thanks for your time everyone.
Will Z.

Regarding band coverage, I think it would be great to cover the more obscure entries. Anyone who's ever researched Christian black metal already knows who Antestor, Crimson Moonlight, Horde, etc. is... Perhaps a truly underground global approach would be nice. The "unblack around the world" thread shows that this scene is in fact worldwide.
A few questions that may spark your research:
How many Christian black metal projects are actual bands and how many are just one person? (I suspect the majority would be solo projects) What drives a person to learn multiple instruments to play a genre of music that is virtually unheard of in mainstream media, and more or less rejected by the secular metal underground?
The secular black metal scene shys away from Christianity in "their" genre. Why do they see black metal as more than just a genre of music? Do Christian black metal artists feel the same way, but just the opposite side of the fence?
Do Christian black metal artists listen to secular black metal? Do secular black metal artists listen to Christian black metal? Why or why not?

Thomas... thanks. That's great! I agree on covering some of the obscure stuff although I'll still probably cover Crimson Moonlight and Horde (especially since they were one of the first). I think a large part of it is going to be destroying the idea that the "black" in black metal is not defined as the satanists would want us to believe. I mean, there are dark scenes even in the bible as you likely know. But obviously, they aren't the depressing, negative messages. Thanks for the input. Keep it coming if you get more along the way. Wz.

I would buy, especially a well-written in-depth one. I agree with everything Thomas said.
Personal tastes: make it a history of the scene as opposed to a band-by-band history/discography. This would "read better" as a narrative I think. This would make you cover the major bands but also allow you to reach into the comparatively minor bands. I would like to see a reasonably large discography but maybe as an index.

Erlend Erichsen, in his previous life a Gorgoroth drummer, wrote a novel called (translated) "The National Satanist", describing a bit the Black Metal scene. That was interesting, albeit a bit callow (if that's the proper term). I would love to read a novel from the other side (so to say, haha); nice story, strong message, recognizable characters.
I would do a translation into German for free for you, if you managed to come up with a good story :-D

Thanks, guys. Your input means a lot to me. I hope I can continue to draw inspiration from you all and maybe ask a question now and again. I've got the fans and artists at the forefront of my mind with this.

Sounds good, just don't dismiss the importance of paying someone to edit it when your done.

Hey Blake.. Oh I know! As much of a grammar freak as I am, I still notice errors after reviewing some of my work. So, you are right... a different pair of eyes is always a plus. Thanks!

Oooh sounds interesting. There are lots of good suggestions in this thread already. I would also be interested in buying a copy. Good luck

I'll definitely buy a copy. I'd like to see a section on the atmosphere created by music and if there is anything particular about the psyche of the Christian black metal fan that draws them to extreme music.

Seems like a good idea! As far as marketing the thing and getting it to sell more then the limited edition status, it would probably have to be at least a bit comprehensive and aimed towards people who do not know anything about christian black metal. Of course, it depends on how wide you want it distributed and how you are going to handle the expenses.

I would suggest to include bands as Antestor and Horde. Especially because they received death threats. Always sells, haha. Seriously, for example that Antestor got physically threatened in Belo Horizonte etc. during their Brazil tour are needed to be mentioned. Good idea anyway. And maybe contact Armando/Eulogium. He was planning to make a book too I believe.

^ Neohadth (in Brazil) have gotten death threats, too. I can't remember (off the top of my head) if that's happened to any other bands.

Thanks guys... these are all great thoughts. I appreciate it very much and I completely agree with you about the death threats issue. I'd like to get some idea for a title that is not generic and in some way a tribute to the forum here... if that makes sense.

Let me know if you all have any cool ideas for a cover. I'm planning way ahead on this one so I can find the right artist who is not hugely over priced. right now I'm thinking something with blues, burples, black and light/shade.. that kind of thing, possibly with a figure with corpse paint in some kind of a church either holding a candle, torch or praying... any thoughts?

Hey Blake.. Oh I know! As much of a grammar freak as I am, I still notice errors after reviewing some of my work. So, you are right... a different pair of eyes is always a plus. Thanks! Same here. I just finished my personal edit of my book and just last week I paid someone to begin editing for me. There is proofreading and then there is editing. Proofreading merely checks for spelling and grammar. Editing checks the actual composition and makes suggestions on how to better word things, or improving things in general. For my book a great resource has been Fiverr. I have been contracting my artwork through an artist on Fiverr and the editor I'm using was on Fiverr as well. You just have to make sure you read reviews and contact the person first to make sure your work is a fit for them before paying.

You know... the more I see animosity toward this music, the more I see a lack of encouragement and the more emails I shoot to designers for book covers that go un-returned....the more I think I'm going to undertake this project.
Just sayin'.....
