This is an AMAZING BAND. I love that they base their lryics on Tolkien. I hope to soon get their most recent album. This is one of the few secular Black metal bands I like, I do like lots of viking metal bands but as far as black metal not a lot of secular stuff.

Mirkwood is an alltime favorite song of mine. Classic.

They sound really great, I especially like "Old Mornings Dawn" and "Land of the Dead", but I don't listen to them anymore, at least not often. At least one of their demos is really blasphemic, I won't name anything here, if you want to look it up, I guess you all know where you can do that. For me, it's one of the few secular bands that I don't listen to, but I want to, among with bands like Enslaved or Moonsorrow ^^

I will give them a pass on that and I don't listen to that demo nor do I or will I own it. I mean if Animae Capronni can go From Satanic to Christian would someone refuse to listen to the Christian due to the satanic past? I find this to be similar but not as drastic a change so as long as their stuff doesn't go back to the content of their demos I am fine with them.

Well, for me it depends whether The band really changed their believes (even if they didn't become Christian!) or if they just thought, let's write different lyrics, but haven't really went to a certain distance from their former believes. I got the impression, that Summoning just made satanic/antichristian lyrics because "it's black Metal and that's normally satanic" and they don't really care about ANY religion, but they cooperated with bands like Abigor! And they still provide their demos for downloading in their homepage. I'm just saying, that for me they are " over the edge", I can't listen to them without having a little bit of a bad conscious. BTW: I don't want this to sound like " I don't listen to them, no christian should!", and I'm sorry if it did sound like it. That's just my personal view on these things

Really a great band. Still can recall the feeling of the first time I heard their Minas Morgul album, it was a complete new experience in terms of atmopshere for me.

Listening to Summoning now. I've only listened to a handful of minutes but I'm not crazy feeling it. Any other Tolkien-inspired band recommendations?

No Metal, but you can (if you haven't already) check out The Tolkien Ensemble. They crafted some (most of? all of?) the songs in Tolkiens work into strangely beautiful pieces of music, varying from folk to etheral hymns. Stumbled upon them by chance and got me a six-cd-set with everything on it.
There seems to be another fantasy-theme-inspired black metal band called "caladan brood". But they seem to just cover one piece by The Summoning ("The passing of the grey company") and the rest of the lyrics come from Steven Erikson's "Malazan book of the fallen".

anfauglith thanks, man! Will definitely check out The Tolkien Ensemble. I listened to Caladan Brood once and will take another listen. Edit: The Tolkien Ensemble are absolutely amazing.

_ anfauglith Totally not black metal, but Glen Yarbrough did the soundtrack to the animated "The Hobbit" from the 70s and, IMHO, it's phenomenal. It's better if you've seen the movie, though Edit: very, very different than the Tolkien Ensemble, which IS/ARE amazing... also, I don't think the link to the album works for the download site, but you can listen to it here
