I'm sure most of you remember Maugrim. Though we havn't been in the scene for years, some of you may still be interested in updates.
We do have a new album finished, and will hopefully be coming out in the next two months. I'll be sure to post a track here once we unveil it.

That's awesome that you're still doing that project!
I went from experimental (Hguols) to more traditional black/death metal. (Ankou Awaits, Orationem)

Yeah, I just finished my 5th full length of Ankou Awaits in June. The last few albums have had real drums though. You got a Maugrim website?

just a facebook page. I could never figure out all that html bullshit to make an actual website haha. Maybe down the road I should invest in learning. I'd say we already have guitars about 65% written on the next album, but it could be quite a while down the road.

You said guitars. Its been a long time since I heard Maugrim, but the last time I listened I thought it was just ambient with no guitars. Or has the music evolved over the years? I remember Maugrim from the Blabberboard days.

I remember when that evolution took place. I think its refreshing when a band evolves TO black metal, rather than evoling FROM it. Honestly, Maugrim and Abigail Williams are the only bands I can think of off the top of my head that have done this.
Well that explains why I can't seem to get ahold of Elan then.

I'm a sucker for layered vocals done right. But I also really love the diversity of vocals you guys utilized - yet never coming off as overdone. The overall feel of the music reminds me slightly of Dispirit. If you're not familiar with them, I recommend them. (Which reminds me... I need to get their new demo tape!) Will this song be on an upcoming full-length, EP, or...? I know that Maugrim was initially at least related to the Christian black metal scene. What would you say the lyrical themes are nowadays?

Well, it will be a "full-length", however it's only just over thirty minutes of material. Two of the songs we planned didn't really fit. I havnt heard Dispirit, I'll try and remember to look them up, From my point of view? It has to do with a lot of metaphorical ideas of suffering, pain and abandonement, and finding solace through ritualistic rites, I suppose. The lyrics for that track are in the description of the YouTube video. I suppose, really, to put it this way. The bands I participate in will always have lyrics based around my current state of being or my current logic of thinking, for example, I've written some pretty "antichristian" shit, and at the end of the day, the bitter taste Christianity left in my mouth has pitted me "against it", but moreso in a Mental standpoint (and this is not something I wish to go further into). I have no problem with "Christians" I come from a home of pastors, and I love my parents and siblings, and many of my close friends are still believers, the idea of me finding truth in it again isn't a reality though. So whatever I write May at times seem to be "unsafe" for a believer, but in the end it's just me speaking my mind on matters.

I do appreciate lyrics that are actually heartfelt, genuine, and honest rather than generically "metal" sounding or fitting the mold for what is expected. (Winter is great and all, but do we really need ten thousand more black metal albums all about winter???) As for Dispirit, it's the new project of John Gossard of Weakling. You can listen to their tunes on Bandcamp: dispirit.bandcamp.com/I've seen them live a couple times and they are quite good.

Yeah, I promise, I'm never going to write generic cookie cutter lyrics, especially not the "kill Christ hail satan" type. That shit is so overdone and stupid.
And Weakling? Perfect! I was listening to Dead as Dreams yesterday and wondering if any of the members were doing anything.

Cool. Don't expect to hear Dead As Dreams pt II though with Dispirit. They're much different; more black/doom metal and very harsh with some ambient and drone thrown in there for good measure too. (By the way, I LOVE Dead As Dreams and I think that will forever be my favorite black metal album.)

I havent really checked your track record on places like Metal-archives. Also, sorry for being off topic, but I was wondering since youguys mentioned Elan here, whitch of his projects are christian? Just interested, cos I only own one song by Elan and the songs on Bandcamp of Wanderlust do not have any lyrics so I cant really tell.

Here are the lyrics for the album, in case anyone was curious. (If you are offended by profanity, here is your warning)
Pale In Horror: pale horror, hearts distressed. trees collapse, crushing will. i can't believe in a serenity. i can't understand the mysteries, brought on by mortal flesh
this wretched heart feels no remorse, these silhouettes painted in the sky. i feel these hands hold my soul, but letting go, just letting go. stripping life, condemned to the dark. hands bind me, against thy will. hands bind. hands bind. undermined, help me understand. why this is never defined.
o, remorseful soul, where lays thy hand? o, pride, where lays thy faith? o, death, carry me home.
this oak has cursed my false name, and splintered hands are left to blame. i cast these sorrows on thy soul, and mourn for the time once lost. enticed by what can never be again. the sorrow, the sin, the insecure mind. i lost myself in time, fucked beneath the shattered sky.
the wind, stains my face, and leaves it painted raw. bitter, cold, and lacking a tender kiss. retracting all this pain, stained in blood, on this oak. the wind still stains my face. a color lost to the wind. a hand no longer held.
Beneath the Widowed Sky: instrumental
The Poison, The Pestilence, The Pain: Alone, I walk this path, begotten. Fucked beneath the shattered sky. The congregation of the wood, judges all i've done. The crows spew their hateful words, and destroy this wall I built to keep the demons out, to keep the nightmares in.
I am the poison, slowly sifting through my veins. I am the pestilence, I breathe in every day I am the pain, taking over this body.
Alone, you walked the path, forgotten. Abandoned beneath the widowed sky. The wind howled, cursing your name. Piercing the violent moans of the damned.
I see no hope left, lying under this broken moon. no faith to carry this wayward journey, the end is near. I mourn the day I trapped my soul, deep beneath the cracked light To bury the spirits, bound by soul, I sought the deepest roots.
I am the poison, slowly sifting through my veins. I am the pestilence, I breathe in every day I am the pain, taking over this body. I am the poison, the pestilence, the pain. The poison, the pestilence, the pain.
Primordial Venom: I walk this dreary autumn, trapped in these wooded tears. Chained to this fucking emotion, abandoned to your fears. Hands choke the land I dwell, as vines endorse this flesh. Damned, I walk, alone this path. Trapping every breath. I am an abomination, these sorrows fill my cup. A storm to bring the bane of my existence. Light shines no more, these hollow bones crushed beneath their tears.
Alone, I walk, this path begotten. Damned to sorrow, empty thy cup. Spit thy words, and drown thy sorrows, I forged this for myself. Choke my life, strip my flesh, return me to the earth. Strip my life, choke my flesh, bury me in the ground.
Hands to breed, and hands to breathe, left me here alone. I walk the abandoned road, fucking my memories romantically. The wind stains my skin, a faint and pale texture. Enticed by what was once, and never will, again.
strip this rotten flesh, from these hollow bones. put me in the ground. dissipate all fucking sound, I am one with dirt. I am one with roots. I am nothing, more. I am.
I am. enticed by what was once, and never will again. choke my life, strip my flesh, return me to the earth. strip my life, choke my flesh. bury me in the ground. end my life, rape my flesh. return me to the ground.

Your lyrics are very artistic. Nice and descriptive! I don't mind profanity as long as the translation doesn't get lost.
The "I lost myself in time, fucked beneath the shattered sky" could mean either ruined or shagged. I thought it was ruined until i saw the "rape my flesh" part in the other track... now I'm thinking shagged?
I guess it could be both.
