What do other people around you who don't listen to black metal think of it? I tried to describe Christian black metal to a lady at work and she seemed to somewhat understand but for rare CD's (I explained that some were rare) she couldn't understand their being rare. She was just like, "Just contact the band, they will send you a copy." Lol.

I dont play any kind of metal that might offend any of our visitors at home, i dont really care for them to understand it or even like it. Most people who are not into metal or hard rock would be pretty freaked out by what my wife and i listen too. Our kids always comment that they like the music when i put a reggae or dub album on though.

My good friends are respectful of Christian black metal precisely because they respect me. I have a feeling that if we were not friends, they would find CBM either childish or a source of comedy.

Most of the people that I've mentioned it to think that it's very strange. "Does that even exist?" and "That makes no sense" tend to be the most common reactions. Then they go on to talk about how all metal sounds like people screaming and beating on trash cans.

Then they go on to talk about how all metal sounds like people screaming and beating on trash cans. Yeah, that sounds pretty accurate. The lady I was talking about earlier said, "I had no idea anything like that even existed." But she's a cool lady was not condescending at all (she has some pretty crazy brothers so I knew nothing would shock her).

Our kids always comment that they like the music when i put a reggae or dub album on though. Oh yeah I totally know what you mean, I didn't "play" it for my mom but sometimes I post on FB about music I'm into and she (being a curious mother) will, of course, sample it. Hah! My brother-in-law is the closest to my music taste but he likes a different kind of metal sound, not so much into black metal (and I like other metal too, but black is one of my favorites). He might like an album or two but he doesn't go out of his way to listen to black metal. I used to work with a dude who listened to anti-Christian black metal, but I was also listening to the same anti-Christian black metal at the time and don't associate with him anymore. I found out later he (an animated atheist) accepted Christ and was seeking to get into Christian black metal, but our lives were so different at this point the friendship could not move forward. It was just a chance meeting and a catching up and making peace. So my "black metal" listening habits are unfortunately enjoyed alone. My wife hears it in the background sometimes (or if I make her listen to it briefly in the car), but she does not care for it. It's lonely here for Christian black metal fandom. Sometimes I feel like I own many CD's that no one else in my entire city owns. I could be wrong, but I wish there were Christian metalheads everywhere (there just aren't)!

CBM fans are so few and far between that we need a forum like this.

Yeah, let's just say if I went up to someone and was like, "Man, don't you like Dark Lay Still?" or "The new Hortor album sounds pretty polished, liking the tight sound!" and they responded in an intelligent, informed manner I would probably drop dead on the spot.
Where do Christian metalheads hide?
(Oh yeah, once again, on the internet *snicker*)

I could talk CBM like the average man can talk football. The problem is finding someone to talk with.

For starters, I think a good chunk of my life (work, gym, etc.) has very little to do with metal, Christian or not. It doesn't get talked about. Most people that I end up talking with about it either have a metal type shirt on or something, and even then, the topic is not necessarily Christian metal - its whatever they listen to, because they have no idea what I listen to.
My closest family network doesn't mind the music, some (like my mom, who listened to Black Sabbath in high school) like the music, especially if its symphonic, but can't wrap their head around the harsh vocals. My wife accepts what I listen to as "being me", but she's jabbed my music just like I've jabbed hers. (country) Her - "*growls* Look, I could make some black metal." Me - "*sings twangy* Look, I can make country music."
If people complain they can't understand the words, I use lyric videos on YouTube. (just pull it up on the Smartphone in my pocket) If they hate the vocals, we'll there's other bands I like that don't scream. (Alcest's "Voyages of the Soul" album is some black metal my wife and I both like listening to)
The ONLY "How can black metal be Christian?" conversations I've ever had are online... and I think every one of those people has had YEARS of secular/satanic black metal under their belt and brainwashed by the content to think that's all their is. To a country girl (my wife) who doesn't listen to black metal, the Christian concept isn't unusual - because there's country songs that talk about raising hell, just like there's songs about Jesus.
Its no different than going to the store, people buying bread - they've been buying wheat/flour bread for YEARS and have a "What the?!?" initial response to "potato bread". "How can bread be made out of potatoes?" - well it can. It tastes a little different, but its still good. Just give it a try. To someone who's never eaten (much) bread, seeing bread made out of wheat, flour or potatoes isn't that strange.
That's just human nature.
I will say this. My mom can't stand "growly vocals", but she's listened to the Orationem CD through more than once. For one, its different because its her son that made it. For two, its the lyrics. She's so proud that I wrote wholesome Christian prayers to my music she printed them out and gave them to my grandma, some of her friends, etc.
My wedding, my wife wanted me in the music - and I INTENTIONALLY played stuff that was abrasive. (for 100+ people in the wedding/reception) Abigail Williams, Alcest, Unheilig during the ceremony... Cradle of Filth, The Breathing Process, Origin, etc. for the reception.
My friends and family know what I listen to - I've been listening to it for 18 years and they've heard bits and pieces. ...they were celebrating my marriage so when Origin's Inhuman came on, the mosh pit was me, my wife, my nephew and 5 other country girls. LOL

I think I only have 1 local friend that listens to Christian metal (Dave from FMD and WTTA), I don't get to talk to him too much though since I'm always busy. At work, I share a room with 6-7 guys and we setup a little media center pc attached to a big tv and have windows media player shuffling on the same screen as our security cameras, we all regularly add our own music to it, so its quite the variety.
Of course I've added some Christian BM as well as other stuff. I'm not the only one who listens to metal though, one of my other coworkers put a bunch of Gojira and Between the Buried and Me. But never fail there is always some kind of jab that occurs when either some BM or DM comes on. Funny thing a lot of times its something that is exceptional for in its own right for the genre, like Drottnar or A Hill to Die Upon or Extol.
Someone will make a comment, "wth is this man, Blake is this yours?" and they comment on how much it sucks and all it sounds like is screaming etc. And I cant help but try to point out that the band is popular outside Christian music as well, because so many people are quick to say music sucks without listening to it when they know its Christian.
The other day something from Drottnar - Stratum came on and someone was like "God this is terrible, they cant even play their instruments". Of course I tried to explain that Drottnar intentionally plays that way and they are actually a very original and somewhat popular band. But its a lost cause

Oh wow, yeah Stratum is a great release. That makes me sad.
Gojira and Between the Buried and Me are good music so at least you don't have to hear stuff that sucks.
And Thomas, I love the fact that you played extreme metal at your wedding. That's awesome. Origin is some good technical brutal stuff, too btw... Christian metal needs some good technical stuff. Indwelling is about the best we have I think (unless you count Inevitable End's first album).

Christian metal needs some good technical stuff. Indwelling is about the best we have I think (unless you count Inevitable End's first album). I made an attempt at Christian technical death metal in 2001 with a project called Akryal. I'll leave that up to you as to whether its "good" or not, but its certainly technical. You can download the music for it here.
