Here's a little bit of GRIM history, some of which I even forgot about. ...but first, some images. These cassettes were BEFORE "GRIM - Scepter of Blood". I'm pretty sure they were early 1998. My mom was willing to let me borrow these, but not keep them. I didn't take her up on this offer... for now. Memories came flooding back when I saw these. They're both essentially the same songs, just different recordings. (the biggest difference is one used "keyboard" drums like Scepter of Blood, and one used real drums when I was DEFINITELY a novice drummer.) Believe it or not, I still remember the sound of "Valley of Slaughter". It was a very long doomy track. For the life of me, I can't remember what "The Dead are Judged" sounds like. ...or "Holy Vow". If I ever get squirrely enough to take my mom's offer to borrow these and listen to them, I'll probably look like I have Palsy when my creative juices from 1998 are reunited with my 2015 brain. ...and I'd have to figure out how to dub to MP3 for others here to listen. Assuming there's enough interest. ______________________________________ Another gem, I'm saving for another thread - as it was the birth of Hguols... ______________________________________ Mom had some BRAND NEW goodies that I thought were long gone, and since she kept multiple copies of my releases, I just helped myself! Hguols - Epitome EEE Recordings version - Shrink wrapped! She also had the Barren Meadows version of the release, but I just took this one. Akryal - Cimmerian Lethargy - Shrink wrapped! (I think most of you have heard this music here.) She also had multiple copies of the original GRIM - Scepter of Blood (Laceration Productions release) still shrink wrapped. I grabbed a couple copies of those... She also had a shrink wrapped copy of Ankou Awaits - Wyllt. I let her keep it though. I didn't even keep one for myself, but at least she did!

That is very cool your mum is so supportive and interested in your music. I love seeing old demo tapes, they make me drool.

That's so cool and I agree, demo tapes are mysterious and beautiful.
Your mom sounds like a cool dudette and a special lady. My mother is equally as cool but is unfortunately not much into metal! Heaviest song she probably "likes" is something by... hmm... she probably remembers a Stryper song or two but wouldn't listen to them now. She flipped when I brought home Mortification's s/t way back in the day (when she saw the cover), LOL!

Hahaha, the heaviest music my mom likes is Scorpions.
I would love to hear those demo tracks if you get the chance to digitize them, Thomas.

My mom likes all music, but doesn't like heavy vocals. She keeps everything I've made because... I made it. It could be gangsta rap or polka and she'd still keep all of it because I'm her son and she's proud of my musical ability. Yes, when I try to play a new album for both my parents, they both stand there with this expression on their faces... ...but even though they don't like it, they still appreciate the skill and talent required for it. _____________________ The one and only time my mom said something was when I was getting into Christian death metal. She saw the cover for Crimson Thorn "Unearthed" (the one with the skeleton on the post) and thought that didn't look very Christian... I handed her the insert and told her to read the lyrics. She handed it back to me 15 minutes later, said "Very cool." and hasn't said a word since regarding what I listen to. She knows that I listen to secular and "evil" music - but isn't worried because it doesn't effect me. It would be different if I "changed" because of it.

Wow, coolest mum in the world. Period! by the way, the only "heavy" (quotes required) music my mother can listen to is something between Linkin Park (the first 3 albums) and Evanescence. And that's already a "cool" thing, considering that almost nobody's mum around here can listen to such type of music. Last time I was listening to Impending Doom while driving my car, and she was right next to me. And I was like "you want me to change music?" and she was like "no no it's ok, let me try! Maybe I like em!". Obviously she failed after 1 min or so hehehe but that's cool enough for me anyway

She was driving and I hooked my phone in for the music. *music kicks in* Mom: "Oh wow!!!" *listens intently* *Shagrath starts growling* Mom: *turns off the radio* LOLOL

^That's basically what's happened every time my mom heard anything. She was cool with it until the vocals came in.
I understand perfectly why a lot of people don't like growling/screaming, but what I don't understand is why I like it. I just...do. It's the most difficult thing to explain to someone who doesn't listen to metal, because they associate it with someone yelling at them and it stresses them out (most of the time). I usually picture myself as the vocalist of whatever band is playing and then it becomes a little more understandable and entertaining. Now that I think of it, I almost never think of myself as being sung to; I always think of myself as doing the singing. Perhaps that's why I can't listen to anti-Christian stuff without feeling super guilty about it...

I understand perfectly why a lot of people don't like growling/screaming, but what I don't understand is why I like it. I just...do. I've often wondered that myself. I think there's some monstrous power (or at least the sound of it) coming from those vocals... and the music. I'f often wondered myself why I like that. It's the most difficult thing to explain to someone who doesn't listen to metal, because they associate it with someone yelling at them and it stresses them out (most of the time). That's because someone who listens to metal hears heavy metal, groove metal, thrash metal, death metal, black metal, doom metal, power metal, symphonic metal, etc. etc. etc. People who don't know what metal is just calls all of the above "screamo". Dude. This is me. Everything I listen to, I'm "playing it live" - but it depends on the band as to what part I'm playing. ...but its like a 3rd person perspective in my head, like I'm seeing myself. I often imagine friends and acquaintances in the audience - some of which who haven't heard my music and are a bit "._." when they hear me. I rarely imagine myself doing exclusively vocals though - its almost always guitars and vocals. Cradle of Filth - vocals/guitars Sophicide - drums Fleshgod Apocalypse - drums on the fast songs, guitars/vocals on the slower songs Woods of Desolation - guitars and vocals Carach Angren - frontman VOCALS... sometimes with guitar. I always picture myself with like wicked looking contacts (to make my eyes either all white, black or pale), corpsepaint and a wicked set of black armor. Sometimes, with my sword mounted on my back. Regarding guilt for secular lyrics, I don't feel it at all. I have no qualms vocalizing Dark Funeral's "Ineffable King of Darkness" at full swing/volume. ...or any secular song really. Its almost identical to when I watch horror movies. I'll daydream that I'm the horrible beast or the wretched murderous villain - and everyone fears me. What's the point in daydreaming just like I am in reality? Bottom line, evil pretend lyrics are not in my heart. Its just thrilling and its horror. Thrills and horror are entertainment.

Now that I think about it a little more, I don't always picture myself as just the vocalist - it's sometimes other instruments too.
Here are a few examples with specific bands: Crimson Moonlight - vocals Antestor - vocals on Martyrium and Omen, vocals and guitar on The Return of the Black Death Frosthardr - guitar Vaakevandring - drums Vials of Wrath - guitar and vocals Evroklidon - guitar and vocals
More often than not, it includes vocals. That's probably because I have little talent in any typical metal instruments...
This is such a bizarre conversation. XD

HAHA!! I know! I never would have thought that someone else besides me would daydream themselves performing the music they listen to. So much for being terminally unique!

Oh well, I keep airguitar-ing and/or airdrum-ing all the time (usually when I'm alone at home, or when there's noone around me)

I only air guitar and air drum to music when I'm driving.
I'm serious.
I'm a good driver though.
